What's a good height for a brew kettle?

I just purchased a 3500w induction burner to set up a brew room in my basement and am building a brewstand/counter of sorts which will incorporate a sink. My question is how high do I want the top of the kettle to be? The burner is 4" high and the pot is 14" tall. Putting that at a typical...

Do I have room in this breaker box?

Unfortunately I only have 100 amp service at my house, but would like to brew in my basement with a 3500w induction burner that needs 240v. Should I be able to use the two unused spots to install a double breaker?

    pressure relief valve question

So I just added a new keg to my keezer and thought everything was great until I lost all of the CO2 in the tank last night. I think I have the leak narrowed down to the pressure relief valve in the new keg. The other three kegs still are under pressure despite the empty tank, but the new keg...

    Question about fermentability and attenuation

As I read about going all grain, there is a lot of discussion regarding the fermentability of wort and the fixed fermentability of extract. Then there is also the ability of yeast to attenuate. I just want to make sure I have it all straight. For example if an extract is fixed at 75%...

NB Maris Otter Extract SMaSH Suggestions

I'd like to try the new NB marris otter extract by making a simple SMaSH with just a 6 lb. jug of syrup. Any suggestions on a hop and hop schedule for a full boil recipe? I have never brewed with MO before. Maybe not even strictly a SMaSH, I guess the goal is to make a really simple session...

Wyeast 2124 Bohemian Lager for Common beer

Anyone ever had any luck using this strain at the higher end tems as cited in Wyeast's info? I was thinking about trying it for a fast turn around lager-ish beer for summer. The attenuation looks better than 2112. YEAST STRAIN: 2124 | Bohemian Lager™ Back to Yeast Strain List This...

    Adding racking port to v-vessel?

I was just given two v vessels and am wondering if it would be possible to add a racking port to one to see if it helps when transferring into kegs so that less sediment is transferred into the keg. Is there a way to do this that would not end up being an invitation for bacteria inside the vessel?

Carrying full brew pot by handles?

I am going to start doing full boils for 5 gallon batches and am in the market for a new brew pot. I am planning on brewing outdoors and then carrying the pot inside the house to chill. Do I need to be concerned about the weight of the 5 gallons when carrying the kettle? And if so, are there...

    picnic tap vs. faucet

Is there an advantage to using real faucets over picnic taps? Right now I am getting good pours from my picnic taps. I have a temp controlled freezer that I keep everything in and just lift the lid and fill a pint from the picnic tap. My basement is not a finished area, so the kegerator is...

    Insulate collar for mini-fridge?

I am going to add a collar to my fridge like this: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f11/finished-keggerator-someone-switched-my-swmbo-122962/ Do you think I should go with 2" lumber or 3/4" with foam board insulation inside? The 2" might be more structurally solid, but I am not sure about...

    Holiday Freezer Quality?

I've seen lots of threads on holiday brand keezers, but am just curious if people have been happy with the actual freezer in the long run. I want to buy a 7 cu ft freezer and that is among the best price, but I guess I would be willing to spend a little more if the quality is worth it. Any...

what specialty grain to use for "pale pale ale"

I am trying to make a beer similar to Saranac Pale Pale Ale. It's just a good, refreshing pale ale. My question is which specialty grain I should use. I will be using extract for the base, so I won't be using Maris Otter. Is there a specialty grain that would be better than others for this...
