Cloudiness in beer considerations & chemistry - by real chemists

ACA (American Chemists Association) is having a free webinar on August 2, 2018 at 02:00 pm EST. It should go into great detail about clarifying beer, turbidity, etc. Here is the link to sign up for the webinar...

    Super Agata - problems

My capper leans forward when I cap bottles (12 oz.) and makes the bottle cap seat unevenly. Anyone else have this problem ? If so, any fixes ? Considered pushing back on the top of the bar that houses the spring so it would be a true vertical downward motion. Thanks

Beating a dead horse - gelatin

Brewing for 12+ years, and for the last 11 have used gelatin. I add gelatin to 65F beer, then crash to 35F In 6 weeks or so, the beer is brilliant, ready to keg and force carbonate. Reading now many add gelatin to COLD beer, and they say it works faster. Anyone with real-life experience...

    Gelatin - addition to ???

I have always added gelatin at the end of fermentation to "warm" beer, then crashed the temp to around 35 F I am reading now that adding the gelatin to cold beer is better. I believed that the gelatin would not be able to attach to yeast, etc. if the beer was cold, because the gelatin...

    Fermentation stopped, then started again

Fermented an ale at 67 F for 7 days. By the end of the 6th day, airlock stone dead. Raising temp to 72 F for 2 days, and after about 18 hours, the airlock is bubbling once every 10-15 seconds. I moved the fermenter to get higher temp, so I am assuming I just roused some yeast and this will...

Clarifying beer - who is using what and when

I have been clarifying my ales in the primary if I will not dry hop. Usually 7 days to end of fermentation around 67 F, then raise temp to around 74 F. Using stainless open top fermenter, so I have open access to beer. 6 gm. gelatin prepared the customary way, then crash temp to around 34 F...

    Airlock fluid

Does anyone use any of the following in their airlock ? Water Water with iodophore (same strength as used for sanitizing) Vodka Rubbing alcolol Beer ??? May be a little leery of rubbing alcohol, but it is not poison. Causes gastrointestinal distress from what I've heard.

Dry hopping with pellets - crush first ?

Thinking of pulverizing my pellet hops before dry hopping. Anyone have any thoughts on doing this ?

    Pro Mash

What ever happened to Pro Mash I have used since 2002 and from reviews, it was the strongest program for brewing on the market. I still use it - is there anything way more advanced ? If so, which one and why. Thanks

    Super Agata Capper - Tips

I hope this has not already been posted, but: Yes, the caps do stick to the inside of the bell. ----Use a Q-tip with vaseline (sparingly) to coat the inside of the bell - works fine. Noticed a popping sound after each capping (when I released the handle to go back to the up position) ---- I...

Dumbfounded - never seen this before using gelatin

I've used gelatin for 8+ years and it works great. I always pull a sample in a clear glass cylinder when I go to the secondary (stainless) to let me know what's going on in there. Initially, they cylinder showed a blob towards the top, then it fell to the bottom - the gelatin. After 1...

    Bench capper vs. hand capper

Anyone have any preference on these. Is a bench capper any better than a hand capper Thanks

Strange thing when I racked to secondary

I brewed, fermented 10 days, D-rest 2 days, checked gravity, my ADF was 74, then dry hopped for 7 days. Racked to brite tank (secondary), and when I was finished, I noticed there was white stuff in the fermenter, kind of scaly, flat pieces of whitish stuff in there. I've been out of...

    Aluminum 5# CO2 cylinder - leaking - ok ?

I have 2 cylinders I bought in 2002, then a 5 year pressure test was done on them in 2008 Both have a leak where the valve and cylinder meet. One leak is a steady fine stream of CO2 - the other one makes one tiny bubble per second. I spoke with the people twice about this, and I feel...

    Hydrometer and Refracometer question

I'm showing 7.40 P on the refractometer (1.029 SG), and my hydrometer is registering 1.012 (I have 2, and they're both showing the same reading) I thought I knew what the deal was (maybe residual sugar or something), but I'm just getting heavy into brewing again and forgot. Fermented a 1.057...

    pH Question.....AGAIN.....need a chemist maybe

I have very soft water, and after adding gypsum to get calcium to 120-130 ppm. Checked pH and was 7.45 I slowly added 70% phosphoric acid until my pH was 5.75 This was a large volume of water - 14.80 gallons 6 hours later, I checked the pH and it had DROPPED to 5.27 I use a good pH meter...

Dry hopping question - temps & time

I usually ferment ales at 66 F for 12 days, then raise the temp to 74 F for 2 days for a diacetyl rest. Dry hopping an APA soon. Q - any suggestions on if I should lower the temp back to 66 F for 5-7 days of dry hopping ? Also, what are the general guidelines for how many days to dry...

    Initial runoff speed

I did a search before writing this as to not duplicate a question. Using a braided tube (Schmidiling product). How many of you would pull hard to get about a gallon, shut down, then resume very slowly until wort runs clear. Years ago, I would usually get clear wort pretty fast - can't...

    pH Meter Calibration Question

Instead of buying pH calibration solution, could you use distilled water to calibrate to 7.01 pH ? Just calibrated mine with solution, and realized distilled water should have a pH of 7.00 Lot cheaper than calibration fluid.

Cleaning funk / haze off of glasses

Sorry for new post, but could not find the one I saw before. Had a few glasses that I could not get the haze off of. Bought some vinegar and submerged one at a time in a container. Just for fun, I checked after a little less than 5 minutes and all of the haze was completely gone. I am...
