    How much should I charge?

Hi brew experts, I am preparing to move across the country and will not be moving my brew kit with me; it was meticulously put together with love over 2 years of home brewing fun...but then I found out for medical reasons I can no longer drink beer...huge bummer. Anyway, I've posted several...

    Starter Trouble

It was "special night" at the homebrew house apparently because I made making a starter look like friggin astrophysics. Long story short, I ended up with too much wort by about 1/3. I just filled the flask up to 1L, dumped the rest and pitched the yeast because it was my second run at it...

    Home Grown Crabapples

A whole tree of them. They'll be ripe next month. I need help with a recipe... Should I do a standard Ale recipe...cut them in half and include them in the mash? Put them in a secondary like a dry hop? Any ideas would be welcome. Thanks!

    Barley Crusher Frustration

I'm hoping somebody can offer some insight... I got a Barley Crusher a month ago in preparation for my 1st AG batch. It came set at .038, I double checked the measurement, and I rolled with it. My efficiency came out low, so after reading some posts and some blogs, I decided a factor may have...

    This One was an Adventure...

Second all-grain batch today...and it tested my mettle as a new home brewer...and a VERY new AG brewer. Newcastle Brown Ale Clone. Grain Bill: 6 oz English Crystal Malt 8.5 LB Pale Ale Malt 1.5 LB Flaked Maize 3 oz Chocolate Malt Total: 10.56 LB First issue: I use a Barley Crusher. My...

Fermenting Issue! Help! (Time is of the essence)

Hi all, I did my first AG batch on Saturday -- a Sunshine Wheat clone -- and all seemed to go fairly smooth. By Sunday, there wasn't much going on fermentation wise, but I wasn't deterred by that. Monday morning, same; I moved my fermenter from my basement to my guest bathroom tub in hopes...

    First AG Brew Day

Hello crew, I just finished my first AG brew day; a New Belgium Sunshine Wheat clone. I wanted to post some notes in the hopes that I can get some feedback from you experts who have already helped me so much. 1. My Barley Crusher mill worked great with a cheap Black & Decker plug in...

Mash tun lost 7 degrees in an hour. Awful?

Does it ruin the mash to add more water to raise the temp? My previous post stated it held heat like a champ. I may have lied. Thanks,

    Had to show it off.

Finally moving into all grain. Not an official Brew scaffold but workable. Testing the mash tun, held best like a champ, as did the HLT. Using a ChefAlarm with waterproof probe submerged during mashing and double checking every 30 min with a RT600C. First Brew day is Saturday. Wish me luck...

    First Mash Tun

I am preparing to jump to all grain and I just built my first mash tun. Followed directions to a tee...turned out great! When I tested the seal there is the SLIGHTEST SLIGHTEST SLIGHTEST bit of drippage by the valve after 20 min (by slight I mean if I wasn't looking hard for it specifically, I...

    Stir Shandy after Ferment?

Hi all, I did my last extract kit before moving to all grain tonight, and I picked a grapefruit shandy for my wife. Interesting point in the instructions... You add the grapefruit flavor after fermentation. The directions CLEARY state to stir rigorously and then let it sit an additional 48...

    BB Imperial IPA

Hi All, I just wanted to toss this plug out and see if anybody had an opinion. I've noticed that Brewers Best has taken some punishment here on HBT, but it's what my LHBS has to offer, so that's what I've been brewing since I started in January...my first two brews were....just ok...but...

    Farts!

There is an unmistakable fart (sulphuric) smell coming from the airlock of my week old Saison fermenter. Pulled the stopper and the beer is very clear on top...no sign of infection. Am I worried?

    Liquid flavor Adding

Hi all, Getting ready to bottle my 4th batch; all extract (moving to all grain this summer, but am loving extract brewing). My LHBS only carries Brewers Best kits and despite some Luke warm reviews on here...I've found them to be very successful. I am preparing to bottle a Toasted...

    Huge fermentation...then very very little

My first 2 batches actively bubbled for 2 weeks. I brewed an Imperial IPA (extract) last week. Massive fermentation almost IMMEDIATELY (I had to swap out my air lock for a blow off tube because the Krausen was climbing so fast) and then after 4 - 5 days of wild bubbling...it's gone to nearly...

    Move to Partial Mash

Hi All, I have bottled (2) standard extract kits, and I am brewing my 3rd on Saturday. I am hoping to make my move to All Grain by June, but I want to take my time, go through the strokes, and make sure my technique and knowledge are all sound before I take the plunge. After Saturday's...

    Bottle Prep Prior to Brewing

Before brewing my first two bottles, I did the following: 1) Submerged and filled with Starsan, dumped out. 2) Placed upside down on a flat surface (on a towel sprayed with Starsan) for the interior to dry. 3) As soon as all suds had dissipated from the inside of the bottles, I...
