    Moving from BIAB - Tips?

I'm joining the club here, I agree with the others. I learned Home brewing on my brothers 3 vessel system. Large foot print of a system even though he built a stand with wheels to move it around. Where do you store it when it's not in use? Pumping boil water up two levels and then boom, the...

    biab on electric stove

I used an electric stove for a long time with many different types of bags. Never had a scorching problem with the bags. The biggest issue I had, the burner left a permanent outline of the element on the bottom of my 10 gallon pot! Moving a 10 gallon pot with 7-8 gallons of water back and...

    Does Co2 expire?

In my area at least, it's difficult to get anyone to refill a tank with an expired test date. There "should" be dates stamped directly onto the tank usually at the top around the outlet. Two years is usually the cut off. Then you will need to have it hydro tested. Some may not test it at all...

Messed-up my grain bill, now what?

True story, Several years ago (so exact details are lost) I had SWMBO go to NB and pick up my grain bill. When she came back she asked me to go to the car and bring the grains into the garage. I thought the what the...? I opened the hatch and found a rather large plastic bag full of my 18#...

Northern brewer all grain kit deal- good for biab?

What he said, if I'm brewing from recipe this is what I do. I have a NB a mile away, I buy all the ingredients separately and then brew. Much cheaper. If I have to I convert the 3 gal batches to 5 gal. Just picked up the ingredients for the 100% kolsch to brew today!

What are some of the mistakes you made...where your beer still turned out great!

This one started be fore I even put the water in the brew kettle. I sent SWMBO to pick up my grain bill from NB along with a extra couple grains for another future batch. When she got home everything she bought was in one large bag. I had a 28lb bag of mixed grains for a 10 gal batch. what to...

    Water Volume Measuring Question

I agree with the above, I don't use what's listed on the recipe. There are too many variables when it comes to efficiency with individual set ups. In my BIAB set up to do a 5 gal batch I start with 7 to 7.5 gallons depending on my grain bill. Your efficiency may vary.

Can I use my tap water? (low ppm)

In my humble opinion, you're over thinking it. When it comes to brewing I'm currently a BIAB brewer, I've done many 3V brews and extracts. I do subscribe to the mantra that if my tap water from the city tastes good I can brew good tasting beer. I've used city tap water and well water with no...

    Is this even possible?!

No matter how much you "think" you screwed up it's always worth throwing the yeast in! because you never know. Some of the best beers I've made have resulted from one mistake or another. I like to tell beginners if some monks 500 years ago could make beer with river water, open fermenters...

How long 'till you were happy with BIAB?

Sitting around one afternoon my brother and i were complaining about the price of a 1/4 barrel and how bad it really did taste after we spent some time in more than a few brew pubs sampling the wares. We took the plunge and went 3V. We were both hooked. It was a pain driving out to his place to...

Do I need to clean/sanitize my keg

I clean after every batch. half fill with hot water with PBW. Swish, sit for about 1/2 hr. pressurize, run through the lines and faucets. rinse, remove posts, lid and tubes soak parts in PBW solution. rinse keg and parts run clean water thru lines and faucets, ready to go. If I'm going to have...

    Poll: BIAB sparging and squeezing

I pull the bag and let the majority drain out and cool a bit using a perforated pizza pan over the pot then I squeeze it

kegging vs. bottling for a first timer

Here's my two cents, I got into brewing with my brother who had been brewing for several years. I always had commercial beer on tap. I was tired of paying too much for crap beer. I invested in 2 used corny's,(ball locks) gasket kit for each and a few fittings (in & outs) to convert my sankey...

    Northern Brewer BIAB Kits

AFAIK they don't have 5 gal BIAB. I brewed several of their 3 gal kits. with really good results when I first started with BIAB. Every once in a while I'll do a batch of the Oatmeal Cookie as a 5 gal brew. SWMBO loves the stuff. I used brewsmith to convert the original recipe to 5 gal and just...

    Kegging question

I'm in the don't rock the boat camp. I initially carb at 20 psi for 2-3 days. then reduce to serving pressure which for me is 12lbs. wait about 5-7 days then it's usually good to go.

    Equipment

How I got started. I was interested and my brother bought me a book... "The new complete joy of home brewing" by Charlie Papazian. Straight forward, plain language, good start. My first several batches of home brew were 1 gal partial mash kits from Northern Brewer. $49.99 gets you everything...
