Searching for the perfect pint - by Vice

Just stumbled across this on Vice. It's not super informative, but is a sort of fun look at real ale... I wouldn't mind being the journalist working on this story :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9UkEBidUfBM&list=PLnPDn1Lb79JECrcTWGsCzcEKodSL_R4lR

    Reusing star san

this whole thing about starsan not being good if it's cloudy is news to me. I've never seen a clear solution of starsan that I've made up, it's cloudy the moment I mix it. I've also never had an infection, so either it's doing it's job despite being cloudy, or I'm REALLY lucky. I usually mix up...

    Head retention

ziggy13, I haven't noticed any "oily" consistency, but to be totally honest, i haven't done a side by side comparison with and without oats, maybe it is a bit oily in comparison to no oats, but I just don't notice. I also usually give myt oats a light toast, maybe that changes things? I'm by no...

    Dry Yeast Pitching

I always directly pitch my dry yeast and have never had a problem. I don't see the need to re-hydrate based on my experience, but many people do. I would be interested though if any academic literature has addressed the topic... I may have to go do a search now

    Best yeast for Mild???

I'm wondering what you think transcription has to do with attenuation.... Yes a yeasts ability to metabolize various sugars will be genetically determined, but transcription? I'm wondering if you're thinking of the various mechanisms that control gene expression, which may work by controlling...

    Head retention

I find that including oats in my grain bill really helps with head retention. They can be worked into a lot of different beer styles as well. I really enjoy using them.

    Sanitizing bottles?

I use my dishwasher. It has a cycle choice that sanitizes things. It get's them good and hot, which kills the bugs at least as effectively as starsan, maybe better. I've never had a problem. There's no need to sanitize if you choose the right cycle on the dishwasher. If it doesn't get things hot...

Would you go all-grain or start legging first?

I vote AG. The reason is that I find AG rewarding, and it really isn't that expensive if you use the BIAB method. really the only additional expense is a bag (I use a $6 muslin one) assuming you have a large enough pot already. If you don't it'll cost you another $50 for an aluminum pot. If you...

    Homebrew facepalms

just yesterday I grabbed my first hop addition and added it at 60 min, and then immediately realized that my first hop addition was supposed to be at 25 min! Not a big deal, I just felt like a dumb *** for not double checking the recipe when I came inside to grab my hops. Also, I often forget...

    Blend yeast or blend batches?

I'll second that blending beer is probably the way to go. Inevitably one of the two strains will out-compete the other in your wort during fermentation, meaning one will propagate well, while the other will not. You might get something new and interesting from pitching two yeast strains together...

I know its been asked before, maybe not in this way. Dry vs liquid

I would agree that accumulated mutations shouldn't be a huge factor over 5 batches.... I'd have to look into it though. I'm pretty sure some researcher somewhere would have addressed this. However, 5 batches of beer is a lot of generations for the yeast. They're microbes and have very short...

I can't get out of this specific flavor profile!

I'll disagree :) BIAB is very straight forward and very rewarding. It's appealing for more reasons than the low cost; you can make great beer with less time/effort/equipment and much less background knowledge. I've even stopped sparging, why complicate things? I've also found it to also be a...
