    Amber Recipe Help

Looking to do an American amber this weekend, buying supplies at Northern Brewer. Kind of just threw this recipe together from other stuff I saw online, any input is greatly appreciated! 5 gallon batch OG: 1.048 FG: 1.012 6 lbs. Amber LME 3/4 lb. Caramel 40 1/4 lb. Caramel 120 1/10 lb...

    Hop schedule

Looking for some advice on a real grassy/piney hop brew. Thinking chinook, simcoe, etc. just hoping to get some input on quantity and timing in the boil/ dry hop. Any other varieties are welcome as well! Thanks! Sent from my iPhone using Home Brew

    Infection or Yeast Raft

No bubbling in the airlock for first three days of fermentation so I investigated... The seal where my airlock goes was torn off on the bottom, likely leaving my brew open for attack. Is this infected or just some floating yeasties? Sent from my iPhone using Home Brew

    Hop Schedule Questions

Hi all, Trying to create my first recipe (a citrus pale ale, hopefully), while keeping in within the amounts of ingredients sold by Northern Brewer. I have never created a hop schedule before and was just hoping for some input... According to the recipe calculator, I am well within all...

    Pale Ale Input

With MLB spring training coming up, I was considering doing a Pale Ale Series, one called the Cactus League, one the Grapefruit League. I'd like each to have its own hop character, the cactus being more piney and the grapefruit being a tropical hop. I was hoping somebody could point me toward a...

    Baseball Pale Ales

    Making Up Extract Deficiency

Unlike my usual LHBS in Portland, OR where I can but LME in bulk, the Northern Brewer I buy from now that I've moved to Wisconsin only carries LME in 6 pound increments. Unfortunately, most recipes call for 7-10 pounds of extract. What is the best way to make up these final pounds of necessary...

    Help With My Birthday List!

My birthday is next week, just into homebrewing so all I have is the basics and I'd like to expand a little bit. All the aunts and uncles, grandmas and grandpas keep asking what I want... What should go on my birthday brewing list?

    Forgot to take OG reading

I did a partial mash recipe for an Oatmeal Stout on Friday and totally blanked on taking my OG reading... Couple too many homebrews on brew day I suppose. Anyways, I took a reading 40 hours into fermentation and found the SG at 1.030. It seemed to be fairly vigorous fermentation so it makes...

    Recipe Suggestions

I want to brew something that I can age while I am away at college, either in bottles or secondary, so that I'm not tempted to crack them open. I was thinking something big and dark, I'm a stout fan. Any suggestions or input?

    First Bottling Day Questions

Planning to bottle my first brew this week, just thought I'd check in and see if there's anything is should make sure to do or try to avoid... I have about 60 bottles, all pry off tops, ready to go. I am a little confused on what to use as a priming sugar. I'm brewing a hefeweizen if that makes...

    Contamination?

8 days into fermentation, white sediment floating in top... Is this contaminated? If so, what are my options. Beer has reached FG, I was just trying to let it settle.

    Hefe Update/Questions

I'm now 6 days into the fermentation process of my first ever homebrew, a German Hefe. Decided to take my first hydrometer reading following fermentation, OG was 1.050 and I'm trying to get down to 1.013. I've attached a couple pictures, if you guys could give me your best guess as to what the...

    Coffee for Stouts

Is there any particular type/brand of coffee that works well for that extra kick in a coffee stout recipe?

    Hydrometer Reading

Hi all, Calculated my OG prior to fermentation using a tube hydrometer to be 1.050 (spot on for my recipe). However, looking back, I realize the wort temperature was likely around 70 degrees, when my hydrometer is calibrated for 60 degrees. What effect, if any, will this have on my final ABV...

    Hefeweizen Conditioning

I am making my first homebrew batch and settled on a fairly simple Hefeweizen. My question centers on what steps I should take following primary fermentation... It is my understanding that fusel alcohols are converted over time to esters, which are a plus for Hefes. However, longer conditioning...

    Another first timer question

How do I actually know when to bottle my first batch besides the vague "in about two weeks"? I'm using a fermentation bucket with an airlock that is 10 days into the fermentation process. I am brewing a German hefe, OG 1.050 FG 1.013 (expected).

    Straining Hops?

I'm currently brewing my first beer (German Hefe) and was so excited to begin that i brewed from midnight to 3:30 am! After cooling my wort to around 70 degrees, I poured the wort into my fermentor from a high height through a strainer for aeration purposes, which strained out my hops, which...
