    Carbonation question

Hi everyone, for batch #100...I went back to one of my old favorites, Russian Rivers' Hopfather IPA. This is the clone recipe's link from this site for those interested: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/showthread.php?t=163952 By the way, I've had the original of this beer...glorious, arguably...

Help! How bad did I mess up?

I brewed an IPA with whole leaf hops and everything went great until the siphoning to bottle bucket. I couldn't siphon it with the hops, I tried three different siphons all of which worked for other beers (including one today) and nothing would work! So I had no choice but to either ditch the...

    Outdoor brewing

So I've noticed that when I brew outside, I experience phenomenal hop loss and the yields are shockingly low. For example, a recent IPA yielded just 3 gallons of bottled beer after 8 gallons of wort was gathered. I'm trying to keep the boil down, any attempt to cover results in boil overs...

    Opaque beer and finings

Hey, Quick question…I'm looking to bottle a beer that just isn't profiling with the clarity I've come to expect. I'm going to be bottle conditioning and I know I can clean it up that way…to a degree, but I'm wondering what you guys think of using gelatin for a couple days in...

    Big question!

Happy New Year, I have been asked to brew for a small cancer benefit--in the past I have donated money to the cause, this year I told them I would brew 10 cases of beer for them (5 or so batches). I initially thought I would use 4-5 party pigs and then do some bottling, but I'm just not...

    Party Pig

Hi everyone, Quick question. I'm really getting tired of bottle washing. I'm not quite ready to completely abandon bottles, but I would like to be able to bottle less. I don't have the cash to start going to a formal keg system...wondering what people think of the party pig as a way to...

    Dry Hop/Interference...weirdness

Hi everyone, So I brewed a little more TF Zombie Dust, fabulous first batch, and I could not believe the fermentation bomb that erupted in my basement. Wow, that thing was on fire! The activity in the airlock was so intense, I've never seen that much going on there! The lid popped off...

Beer showing no sign of fermentation

On Monday I brewed an IPA with Chinook hops, something along the lines of an Arrogant Bastard. I used all grain, had fresh yeast from a Wyeast package at the homebrew store. I saw no irregularities in the process, in fact I felt very positive about the endeavor. Post boil it cooled in about...

    Help!

I'm in the middle of brewing a batch and of course...the digital scale goes out. Great. Does anyone have any approximates for ounces of hop pellets per a common unit of measurement such as a teaspoon? Thanks

    Intro to Kegging Question

Hi, I'm looking to gradually phase out my bottling process...given the frequency of my brews, bottling is becoming a nuisance. Can anyone share a link or text source that reveals what I need to know as I make this transition? Appreciate it.

    filtering question

As many of my posts have indicated clarity is a really big issue for me! I love the taste of my homebrews but I'm really looking to get commercial quality clarity. One thing I just tried produce super clear beer at bottling time, but now I'm a bit concerned. after primary was complete and I...

    Gelatin finings and Yeast interaction

Hi, I've done a number of dumb things when brewing--here's another. I brewed the now famous Centennial Blonde from the recipe section (AG) it was going superbly, chilled it down and realized that I didn't use Irish Moss or Whirfloc to clarify. I pitched my yeast and added a small amount...

    I'm an idiot part 312

My wife would probably indicate that number is too small... I was brewing a very light ale from grain. I forgot to use whirfloc, I added a small amount of gelatin in with the yeast as I placed in primary--how dumb is this? Can it be saved? I knew after I did it it was dumb... Thanks

    Cleaning up my ale...

I've kind of hit a wall in my brewing. I have about 17 batches under my belt...all ales! I've done Pliny the Elder, Sierra Green, Sierra Celebration, Bells Two Hearted, Three Floyds Alpha King, Zombie King, etc... I'm an alehead, I only brew ales, as I only drink ales. My...

    White House Honey Ale

Well, after a petition circulated under the Freedom of Information Act, the White House has released it's Honey Ale recipe--it looks pretty good on video and frankly this would be a conversation starter when served! My wife is a big fan of Honey Ale's so I thought I would try it, but the cost...

How big of a gaffe is this?

I am brewing a Celebration Ale with extract and I accidentally used 1.5 lb of wheat extract instead of malt extract--I used 6.6 of syrup. Dang it...

    Brewing with an induction cooktop?

I'm looking to forward all of my brewing processes to the basement where I have a fridge, sink, couple tables, etc... I don't have a stove down there and am very leary of doing anything using propane in this area that is not ventilated. I was working out and saw this on the TV at the Y...

    Pliny the Elder question

Hi guys, I am interested in brewing this recipe for Pliny which comes straight from Vinny C. at RR. I have brewed Pliny before but I have used alternative recipes, most of which come from Vinny...but I am interested in trying this one. This recipe calls for clearing 8 gallons from the...

    Malt Question

Brewers, I have a sealed factory package of carapils malt that I have not opened. I have had it for about 3 months--do you think it is still useful or does malt have a shelf life even when sealed? Thanks

Question on a pair of beautiful winter seasonals

Has anyone had any success in cloning either Snow Day (Fort Collins Brewing) or Winter Ale (Alaskan Brewery)? If so would you mind sharing? I really like the spruce tones in the winter ale, but am hesitant to try and tackle this brew.
