so when i was racking my beer for the secondary fermentation i snuck a taste to find that my beer has a skunky taste to it. this is my first batch ever so i have no idea what would cause this besides sunlight which it has not been exposed to. the beer is still cloudy and is beginning to settle. will the skunky taste go away after more time in the carboy?

Revvy should be here soon to clean this up. In the meantime, if this is your first batch, just wait it out and it will be beer eventually. Right now it will taste weird because it is green.
Make more and then more and by the time you've made even more, this batch will be ready and that taste will have gone away.

I agree its good to taste the beer at every step. But, you have to expect different flavors in immature beer. This is what we mean by 'green beer flavor'.
It's always yeasty, often the hops can be a bit over powering, the aromas might not be very present yet, and all the malt flavors are still melding.
Its the same reason good scotch and wine gets aged a long time...to let things blend, mellow, and reach peak flavor.

well i assume its yeasty because there is a distinct color change from the top and the bottom that is increasing daily which i suspect is the yeast dropping out of the beer.

Gelatin will help drop that yeast out and clear the beer.
1table spoon of gelatin in a cup of hot water -- dissolve . cool and then pour into the 2nd and let it sit a couple of days... it will drop it out and clear the beer.
Some do not like this .. to me .. it works perfectly.
