About to make my first all grain with a receipe I found on HBT which is a Coconut Porter. I've done all grain before but only using kits. Its a 10 gallon batch size that calls for 4 packs of London Ale III. The LHBS only had 2 and told me too make a 3 quart starter. I don't have a stir plate and have never made a starter before, so I bought a gallon jug and a extra airlock. My question is how much water and malt do I need to boil to make this starter. ( I bought a 1.375 lb/22 oz bag of DME)

A little more then 3 quart, basically enough to account for boiloff while you boil for 10-15 minutes.

No need for the airlock, I just sanitize some Aluminum foil and cover the top of the jug. You want oxygen to get to the starter.

Of course I have only done 1 starter, and never will go back to not using one.

Oh sorry, 100 grams/1 liter.

So for you 284 grams or 10 oz.

Sorry I don't have a volume number. That is the numbers I learned from here.
