Hello all! I will be attempting a Pliny clone in the next week or so and someone suggested to make a yeast starter. Do I use all of my yeast in the starter and some of the DME out of my extract kit? I've researched yeast starters on youtube and it suggests 2 cups water and half cup DME. Any other tips or suggestions are highly suggested :) Cheers and happy new year.:mug:

You really should use separate DME. 100 grams in 1 liter, 150 grams in 1.5 liters etc. Weigh it, don't go by volume as that is inaccurate due to density. i.e. how much is packed into a cup.

This ratio will make a 1.038 to 1.040 gravity solution.

Check mrmalty.com and yeastcalc.com for calculators and information so you are making the proper sized starter for the recipe you are brewing.

This is assuming liquid yeast. If you are using dry yeast it is better to pitch multiple packs, re-hydrated is best and this is different than making a starter.

Go here to figure your starter. http://yeastcalc.com/
Yes you will use all of your vial or smack pack. If you are using dry yeast you do not do a starter, just rehydrate one or two 11.5 gram packages.

You could use some DME from your kit or buy a bag of extra light at the homebrew store.

Your kit instructions are most likely not the best. Ask for advice.

Don't forget to control the fermentation temperature.
