I recently made a pale ale, and my normal go-to wasn't available at the LHBS when I stocked up on supplies. I decided to check out the Midwestern Ale yeast from Yeast Bay, which folks say is the Bell's yeast.
Well, it did the trick. It starts with a beautiful top-cropping krausen, and flocculates incredibly slowly. Almost annoyingly so. As it grew and fermented, it reminded me of another yeast I'd used once in the past. I looked through my records, and decided it reminded me a *lot* of WLP051, California V yeast. That was in a red IPA, and this was in a pale ale, so the yeast character can't be really compared based on what I've done with either strain, and I can't say they're the same. But I have a hunch that they may be related.
