Made a yeast starter with wlp300 and it went nuts after 6 hours foaming over the top of the flask and losing a lot of yeast so I transferred to a 2 gallon stock pot as a last minute decision. I let it ferment for 17 hours and it had a thick krausen dome on top so I decided to put in the fridge and crash it. Hopefully stopping it at that point will not be an issue? Anyone know if I am going to lose a lot of the viability by doing this? Looked like a regular beer fermentation after 3 days, which I have never seen before with a starter.

High krausen is when you want to stop it, and WLP 300 is 1 of the most active yeasts I've used. Sounds like you did just about right with it.

WLP300 are little monsters! I exclusively use the same strain for my hef which won best in show fairly recently. You definitely want some foam control in the starter or use a much larger vessel than you think you need!

I've had this strain bubble out of the 2L flask before, and no ill effect on the final beer. What are you brewing? Typically it's for hefs/dunks so you won't be going over 1060. WLP300 is a sick and twisted yeast, it can handle the abuse.

Funny story about this strain-

i tossed out the used package into our trash downstairs and over the course of a few days it fermented whatever vegetables or sugars were in there. man that was the funkiest aroma in the house EVER!!

I'm brewing a hef this weekend. The starter was not like anything I have seen before with my starters. I had to shut off he stir plate because it was making it go crazy, that's when I transferred it to a stock pot so it wouldn't foam over. It's in the fridge now sleeping nicely.
