So I had a friend come over for brew day and he brought the supplies. (including 1L of starter American Ale Yeast). We finished the brew day and had 2 5gal buckets ready, however We werent able to split the starter correctly (2/3 of it went in the first bucket.)

We hoped that there would be enough in what was left to get the second bucket going however 8 hours later I checked it and bucket 1 was bubbling away, while bucket 2 was doing nothing. So I looked around my supplies to try and find some leftover packets of dry yeast and all i could finde was some Pasteur Champagne yeast so I added it. The next morning it had started bubbliing slow and steady.

So will the wine yeast mess up the beer too much?

It might produce some strange flavors and possibly dry it out too much.

You should have waited. Although you didn't pitch enough yeast into the second batch, the yeast would have caught up. It would have taken longer though.
