So while my wife loves pretty much any beer and will drink a lot of beer that guys wont. She asked me if i could make something that was low in calories but had taste for every day drinking. She is wanting me to make something like sam adams light or yuenling light. I have never gave any thought to how to cut calories out but keep taste in. any advice from anyone? are there kits out there to make lower cal beers that dont taste like watered down beer?

Brew a mild. Something with an OG around 1.030-1.035 will give you a finished beer that is just over 100 calories /12 oz... And they're good. The fact that you're using good ingredients and drinking it fresh makes all the difference.

There's quite a few recipes on here for "session beers" if you try and search. I'd rock the mild as well.

"There's a Miller lite clone in the recipe forms that is low cal."

If you're going to results to this...just buy Ultra.

I prefer to cut out a few hundred calories elsewhere and just enjoy my full flavored beer, but there's more than one way to watch calories.

Like everyone else is saying, brew a mild. If she likes hops, that's a great way to add unique flavor you won't get from store bought BMC's.

Ok see i didnt know how many calories was in a mild. I figured that to make lite beer there was more than a difference besides just making one with less alcohol in it.

i totally agree with you and would skip a meal if that means i could have a couple extra good beers...lol i think im going to search for the "session" beers and see what i can come up with from there. or i could always tell her its a light, think she would figure it out? lol :mug:

thanks so much for all your input. I found an extract kit at NB for an American Rye Ale and used the calculator on hopville. after plugging in all info it says it will be 82 calories per 12 oz. now that seems super low to me, but if it tastes good and its close to it then i am all about it. so i guess i will be brewing this soon here.

Is there any way to calculate calorie count from the recipe?

I just plugged a little mild recipe into Beersmith and figured the calories using their calculations... I'm sure there's a formula for it but I don't know what it is... I would imagine ABV would be a factor, as well as any unfermentables.

Beersmith says that that recipe would yield a beer of about 138 cal./12oz. Now I want to know which calculator is closer to the real number!

ok so that 82 calories isnt correct...i plugged in the amount that the recipe says it comes with but when you add in the amount they say comes with it the OG is way off from recipe. i had to add an additional 4 lbs of malt to get OG where the recipe says it should be. in doing this the calories raised up to 138. thats fine with me though as the ABV also came up almost double! :rockin: So i am not sure if the recipe is wrong on the OG or the ingredients. guess i will find out when i get it see the amounts in kit and see what the OG really is.

HA! now that i see the other calculator came up with 138. i am betting that beersmith is correct...either that or i entered/read something wrong...

ok i see why that one came out right the first time. it doesnt ask for lbs and type it just goes off of OG and FG. The one i tried was more detailed and it gave me the OG based upon the amount of extract and weight of it. I believe it probably is going to be the 138 since both calculators came up with it once i adjusted it to the same OG.
