I got a brew of the month club for Xmas from Midwest supplies. SWMBO ordered dry yeast with them which I've never had an issue with in past brews. I brewed Midwest big river brown ale and Scottish export 80. Both brews only finished at 4.0% ABV and should've been around 5%. I hit my target O.G. on both?? This is the first yeast I've used that was shipped. Could that be the issue?

We need more info. What was OG and what temp did you mash at and then ferement at? How long?

Both were extract with steeping grains. Steeped @ 155.

O.G. on the brown was 1.048

O.G. on the Scottish was 1.052

Both fermented for 14 days @ 64 degrees.
Instructions said the yeast performs best at the low end of ale spectrum.

I always ferment at that temp too, but then raise it up to 70 if I can for a few days. That could help the yeast eat up a little more sugar.

Did you take a final gravity reading?

What was the temp of your wort when you took the original reading?
