Heading over to Portland in a month, planning on making a trip over to Yakima too while I am in the area. Any not to miss breweries in the two areas?

Breakside is good too but a little closer to a "commercial" brewery than a smaller independent one.

Brujos has some higher ABV IPAs than can catch you off guard rather quick. They don't drink like 8+ ABV beers......

Portland proper or a suburb?

Can't speak on Yakima except Yakima Valley Hops. I would load up and take some back with you.

Bale Breaker and Bron Yr Aur in Yakima (Bron Yr Aur is in Naches ~ 20 minutes away)

In Potland check out Great Notion on Alberta.

I’ll second Breakside. They do a good job on a wide array of styles.
Wayfinder is pretty good as well.
There are a ton of other great breweries here, I’d look at what’s in the neighborhood of where you’ll be staying.

If you’re into British beer, there’s a grip of places that serve from cask.

Yes I do love cask ales, I would definitely stop by one that had a good selection of cask. Hogshead in Denver is my favorite over here.

I am staying outside of town but have a day to spend in Portland with a designated driver.

Its a day trip to visit the area. I don't have anywhere specifically to go except some of the breweries listed above.

Yeah I just dropped some cash at YVH for an order a few weeks ago. Will definitely swing by.

Depends on styles you like and area you will be in.
My recommendations in Portland proper, not suburbs:
Upright, Great Notion, Ruse, Gigantic, Breakside.
In near suburbs:
Pfriem in Milwaukie, Wolves and People in Newberg.

Gotcha. To add to the suggestions above:
Root & Rye - A bit outside or Portland, but a really cool hop farm and brewery
3 Mugs Public House - Suburban, family run, nano brewery. If you go, tell Jay M&M say hi from Texas
Full Sail - Worth the drive. Otherwise, you can also get most Full Sail beers at local grocery stores. Their Amber was my gateway beer.
McMenamins - Every location is different, but Kennedy School is my favorite. You have to get the Rubinator.

Have fun!

Ruby + Terminator?

Mcmenamins are cool just to hang out and kill some time, especially if you’re in a group. Decent burgers and cool stuff to see.
Agreed- The Kennedy School is my fave. I spent many evenings, years ago, in the principal’s office getting hammered.

Portland also has lots of Brew n View theaters. When I first moved here, I the concept of eating a slice and drinking a pint while watching a movie was pretty cool.
