OMG! How did it taste?
When I lived in Germany I had a co-worker (American) who was so tight with his money that he bought a 2 cases of this. When he was standing in line the Germans were looking at him oddly. The guy behind him said Germans don't even drink Oettinger. They called it NOT-inger.
Fact: The deposit on the case and bottles was more than the cost of the beer.
Shortly after his arrival in Germany I took him to a gasthaus for lunch and turned him on to a Hefe Weizen. To my surprise he picked it up and downed the entire glass in 1 chug.
I said: Did you even taste it? His reply: Yeah. It's OK, but it has nothing on Milwaukee's Best.
All I could do was shake my head.
Its not the worlds finest Pilsner, thats for sure, but far from the worst.
Ticks most of the boxes, Slightly sweet with a nice grainy malt hit finishing with a bitterness and the end for balance. Its probably the slightly metallic bite to the bitterness that lets it down overall.
Pretty cheap here too, so its a decent session beer on a hot day.
Lol, this friend of yours must have liked the Hefe to some extent, At least he tried it, some of my mates who only drink mass produced wont look at anything else.
Im currently on my 3rd German tour and still can't stand Pils! The worst is Bitburger or as we call it ***tburger[emoji2961]Sadly, I have to agree with you. Even in Germany (of all places) he drank American beer whenever possible...but he never turned down any beer. I never got past his logic.
My first tour in Germany was in 1975. I acquired a love for Hefe Weizen and lagers, but not a German Pils.
When I was stationed there in 1999, a co-worker's landlord was a salesman for Warsteiner and my neighbor was a salesman for Hasseroder.
The both gave me free samples...by the case. I never acquired a taste for either of them.
