Hard to find Avery Brewing stuff in my area these days, feel like maybe they retracted a little bit to help sustain themselves?

Visited their taproom back in…2015? and had the Rumpkin on tap and that is by far still my favorite “special occasion” beer. Is it better to pine for the 1 2017 bottle I have left or just enjoy the damn thing and try to figure out how/why to get out to Boulder, CO?

Local WCIPA with a JD chaser in the middle..😂

So the tasting/comparison session is over, so feel like I should be drinking water for the rest of the night.

Comparing 2 different runs turned into, “Oh…look, I’ve got a couple of rums from Barbados. Seems only fair to compare all of them..” 🥳

I search my local Goodwill from time to time and sometimes end up with a winner.

Speaking of winners...

OK, so which one was your favorite?

Presents all wrapped and all the cleaning done. Time to share a Bourbon County 2018 with the mrs. Merry Christmas!

[edit] Held up pretty well. It got lost because I keep hops and yeast in the same fridge with my bottles and cans. They got no place else to go. This was behind a bunch of stuff.

Done this in a couple categories, blind. You have to get somebody to pour for you and write down which is which)

- Bourbons Under $20 (Old Crow won for me, it is what it is.)
- Bourbons $20 to $50 (Makers Mark won for me out of what we had)
- Gin (I found I love Tanqueray Ten)

This is a great way to explore and compare side by side and learn what you like and don’t like. Highly recommend.

BTW - I’ve found most of Plantation’s stuff just rocks. The 5 year is a bargain for what it is. Surprised that doesn’t cost double what it does. The Anniversary is fantastic but it gets a bad rap because people think its supposed to be 25 years old. Thats not what it says.

Merry Christmas! May I ask what company the Santa comes from?
I’m drinking coffee.
I was just searching to try to find it too! I really like it!

Drinking coffee for now. Will have some Irish Wiskey later. My wife bought me a couple bottles to remember our Ireland trip earlier this year. She also got the kids each a big box of Tayto cheese & onion crisps!

Merry Christmas to you too!
I received the Santa many years ago as a gift and have the following info about it.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all you kindred beer lovers everywhere!

Well, I mentioned this one was coming, a belly-warmer if there ever was one. Samichlaus, or “Santa Claus”, a beer brewed once a year on December 6th, and a true Christmas celebration for all of you are lucky enough to find it. Maybe if you are good, Santa will leave some in your stocking next year!

Hurlimann isn’t around anymore, but their high-ABV classic is now brewed by Schloss Eggenberg in Austria. Hurlimann was a Swiss brewer known for pioneering methods of producing high-ABV beers. How high? For years, this was the highest ABV brew you could find, a monstrous 14% ABV. That’s like a big oversized glass of Cabernet Sauvignon. How about this 1-liter Maßkrug full? That’ll get you going! Actually I suspect their regular beers might have been in that stein - a liter of 14 ABV brew would likely send you to an early grave! I don’t have a Schloss Eggenberg stein, but I have a Hurlimann – fun to dust off and honor for this tasting!

I have to admit, there is a place for these brews primarily late evening sippers or nightcaps - like a fine wine, liqueur or brandy. I’d be interested in how many yeast dumps you’d need to get the ABV up that high without freezing distillation. 14% would do in most yeasts very quickly, new soldiers needed!

A beer this big has a lot of characteristics we don’t experience in most beers. For one thing, everything is more concentrated. It is more boozy, more “caramelly”, more “raisin and plum” inundated. Just bigger in every parameter we usually give these beers. Not as much head, zero lacing. I can’t really dial in the IBU for you, too hard on a beer like this. I can say that it is balanced to the malt bill, so you don’t experience a malt bomb, but the hops aren’t very forward either. It is big boozy perfection, if that is what rings your bell.

Funny thing on packaging – says 1 pint, .9 fluid ounce, 330 ml – but 16.9 ounces equals 500 ml right? 16.9 ounces? Not this shrimpy can! So obviously the math whiz keying in the label text must have been drinking this beer at the same time! I think this means they owe me another can! Gotta try it! Prost!
