F drinking out of the can

I lost my dad somewhat unexpectedly 3 days ago. First beer I had with him decades ago was a Coors Original. His favorite singer was Faron Young. Drinking Coors and listening to Faron Young in my own private wake.
Sorry for your loss. I lost my dad in 2022.

My most serious attempt at mead to date. Traditional style 9%ABV. I probably need to try a commercial mead at some point so I can have a reference point...View attachment 859419
The best mead I’ve ever made so far was with apricot flavor. Something about apricots fits perfectly with a mead. Its my wife’s favorite too - and she hasn’t liked any mead I ever made before that one

Latest HB, a 3.7% Bitter hopped with First Gold and fermented with A09 Pub. Still needs some time, and a bit overcarbed for the style, but since it’s kegged I should be able to fix that.

That looks awesome. Love me some first gold - and its been hard to find as of late. I haven’t used many of Imperial’s yeasts, but A09 is one I’ve used more than once. I have a WY1469 I have to do something with soon

Thanks. This was my first time using both First Gold and Pub. I agree, FG is hard, but not impossible, to find. Funny, I had an extra pack of 1469 too that I gave to a fellow HB'er at out club meeting last night.

That's gorgeous, sir!

I hear you regarding the carbonation thing, it usually takes me a week to find the right balance. It is fun to see just how radically the ale's personality changes as you get it dialed in. It's a rewarding process.

Here's that inspired by Paulaner yellow can lager thing that I made a few months ago.

One of the fun things about brewing UK-style ales is that they blend nicely. I've been enjoying ~20% dark mild and 80% ordinary mild. It's interesting just how potent invert #3 and UK dark crystal is. Even highly diluted, they're still there. Subtle, for sure, but still there. Scaled up to 1.065, this would be an outstanding Jan-Feb ale. I don't brew that big anymore, but it has me thinking those second pint of the night thoughts...

HB Doppelbock. Attempt at an Ayinger Celebrator clone. I guess low abv for a Doppelbock at 6.8%, but thats what theirs says. I like this alot.

I did an attempted clone of that beer with my hb club, I'm not much of a "cloner" but our president wanted to give it a shot, it was a good dopplebock, we came in a little low also, which was my fault, but anyway yours looks nice.

I hear you about not being a cloner. As a brewer, the path to hell is paved with clones. It's far better to embrace your rig and learn to shape it like a bansai gardener than to try shoving a grist down its throat and become frustrated when it doesn't come out perfect.

No doubt, I couldn't agree more.

In years past I’ve made a lot of comments about domestic Oktoberfest beers. Sometimes I’ve taken jabs at using a “C” rather than the “K” in Oktoberfest. Well-deserved jabs!

Today we bring hither Samuel Adams Octoberfest. What can I say about this one that hasn’t been said. For one thing, this is a seasonal brew. I’ve noticed slight differences over the years. This year’s batch is a malty and low carbonation beer. I’ve had a lot of Oktoberfests. For being such a major player, I’d expect the guys down in QC to have this one right on the money.

Sadly, about the only thing of interest is the beautiful “Orangey” color – flavor wise, taste to me is a caramel bomb. I’m picking up residual sweetness. This beer has very low CO2 levels. If I’d have to guess, I’d say 1-1.5 volumes, about half of normal like a British pub ale. (Hey, Hey! - Samuel Adams emulating anything British? Blimey!) Half of normal means halfway to flat. I can say it is a Lager and does have 5.3% ABV. ‘Nuff said!

So, I’d save your $12.99 for another half rack of another beer. Look for one where they spell it with a “K”. Calling balls and strikes, folks. Great beer to cook brats in!

I don't try to clone my favorite beers; I pay homage to them.

For some beers I've resigned myself to just getting them from the store. Duvel, for example. I've taken a couple swings at cloning it, and while it was decent HB, it didn't come close.

Picking up a 4 pack of the real deal is a treat.
