I've liked everything I've had from Enegren.
They’re about 2 hours drive from me. I’m lucky to get what they distribute, but I really wanna go there and try things at the source. I just need another reason to make the trek besides the brewery to get the wife to agree to a little road trip.

Sometimes only a dark brew is going to hit the spot. Today we have a fantastic example of Southern German beer, Ayinger’s yummy Altbairisch Dunkel, or “Old Bavarian Dark” for you Yanks. Fantastic Bier!

OK, OK, I know there have been a lot of “Dark Beers” out there over the years. I can remember back in the 1970’s and early 80’s there being a LOT of pizza beers you could get with your Supreme triple-meat with extra Pepperoni. I’ll take a 16” extra-large and a pitcher of that dark beer on tap!

You know I kind of miss those beers actually, seemed like every brewer out there used Simamar or caramel coloring to tweak up and darken their standard Lagers. You could buy the standard US beer, and if you were lucky, there was a dark version available. This was long before the craft beer movement - a great time, and it really tuned us up a bit for beers like this. Check out the color in my mini-beer glass - That’s what I’m talking about!

Ayinger cranks out this tasty Lager at a restrained 5.0% ABV – plenty to get your Euro freak on! This is a 100% Reinheitsgebot beer - brewed to the beer purity laws of 1516 – Malt, Hops, Water! (Hey, yeast came later!) This is a delicious and malty brew, beautiful roasty color with Continental hops, but not a lot – this is a balanced, malt-forward brew. You want hops, go try their Bavarian Pils! Prost!

My most serious attempt at mead to date. Traditional style 9%ABV. I probably need to try a commercial mead at some point so I can have a reference point...View attachment 859419
It's a good idea, but if you like yours why spend the money?!? 🤣

Speaking of.... didn't expect this to dry out all the way. 14% Mead sample. Will back sweeten with 1lb honey tomorrow.

I lost my dad somewhat unexpectedly 3 days ago. First beer I had with him decades ago was a Coors Original. His favorite singer was Faron Young. Drinking Coors and listening to Faron Young in my own private wake.
Sorry for this big loss.

Truly sorry for you loss. Unexpected can be really hard. Hoping for good memories from here on out...

Have a Belgian Quad mashing all night. Such a beautiful night so getting the big bomb out to see what's out there. HB Cherry Quad in hand. Credit where credit is due. @Remmy gave me the recipe many years ago.

Edit, Spotify set to Faron Young.... easy listening.
