The moderators (like me) ban the spammers and delete their posts and threads. The administrators are the ones who have to deal with the spam filters and other ways of keeping the spammers out in the first place. This has been a remarkable attack and I know the admins are working on it.

How about the kind of thing hackaday uses, where your first few posts needs admin approval, after that you can post freely? Captchas for creating accounts aren't half bad either to get rid of the bulk of spammers.
