Does it matter? A boil kettle or mash tun being tall and narrow over short and wide?

I can see it mattering more with a mash tun. Taller the more pressure at the bottom, possibly compacting it a bit more then a wide shallow version.

Main reason for the Q is I'm looking to use up less storage space, and if I can put vessels inside others, it can save a lot of space.
(dang this hobby sucks up space!)

A wider than tall boil vessel with create higher boil off rate. This may or may not be an advantage to your brewing style. I've had vessels that boiled off very large amounts. I had to adjust my recipes for the boil off.

At the volumes we do at the home brew level, the mash tun dimensions will not matter as much as it does in a commercial setting.
