I'd actually consider driving our to Upland twice for the two events they mention if membership included 2 tickets to each event. I'm not traveling all that way to attend a festival by myself.

Upping the # of tickets would be a good start to giving people some value back since the upfront cost doesn't include beer.

I'M TRYING NOT TO HATE YOU UPLAND.

lemme know if you come to town, maybe we can open some bottles that make it seem a bit less like a raping in Bloomington haha

maybe they'll get the hint?

I doubt it. This is clearly a fundraising attempt. It's spelled out in the email. At best, we'll get a 'sorry we goofed up' email and/or blog post and we'll all collectively attempt to forget they ever offered this service and try to remember when Good Guy Upland gave coffee and donuts to people waiting in the cold to buy Sour Reserve after GABF last year.

MordorMongo - If you haven't already tried to cancel your membership, give them a call. You wouldn't be the only one. I know of a few others that have already had it refunded.
On it, trying something slightly different. A different angle if you will.

I honestly think bypassing the lotto (see note, I have NEVER won) IS worth something.....and it seems legal in Indiana to offer a DISCOUNT on pre-sold beer. If you catch my drift.

Stay tuned.

Can't discount what you can't pre-sell though, right? Pre-sale is what's illegal. Let's figure something out here, otherwise I need a refund.

I'd think membership coming with a % discount would be legal. I don't see anything that suggests otherwise, that I could find.

EDIT : Forget it, apparently it IS illegal too, info coming. **** Upland.

To my knowledge it is illegal to offer any discount in the state of Indiana to any one group and not another. Happy Hours, Pre Sales, etc. I have even been told that in the eyes of some excise officers, employee discounts at liquor stores are illegal.

Response from Upland regarding discounts was prompt and appreciated, though not what I was hoping for (would've been up here earlier, but I had to get Taco Bell, sorry):

"Unfortunately, it is against the law in Indiana to discount alcohol for a specific group of people, or at a specific time of day (no "happy hours" or "ladies get half off").

Our focus has to be more on the events (where there will be beer).
"

Edit - I see that 17 of you already have stated this. Oh well, this was still their response.

So what makes this odd to me is that I can sign up for mug clubs and **** at different places and received discounted pricing on beer. This is at bars, not even necessarily at breweries (though I think it is done at places like RAM and Granite City, which are breweries).

The work around with mug clubs is that you bought the mug. So the bar will sell everyone who walks in with that vessel the "discounted" price. But if you don't buy that cup, then you pay a different price.

Knowing this they should have realized "Well, this isn't going to work. How else can we raise money?" and moved on. Even just selling the memberships for $50 and letting the internet get pissed when it sells out in 2 minutes would have worked better and they still would have netted $25k.

Alright, well here is Indiana law on the matter of sales times:
IC 7.1-5-10-20
Unlawful acts by retailers
Sec. 20. (a) It is unlawful for a holder of a retailer's permit to do
any of the following:
(1) Sell alcoholic beverages during a portion of the day at a
price that is reduced from the usual, customary, or established
price that the permittee charges during the remainder of that
day.
(2) Furnish two (2) or more servings of an alcoholic beverage
upon the placing of an order for one (1) serving to one (1)
person for that person's personal consumption.
(3) Charge a single price for the required purchase of two (2) or
more servings of an alcoholic beverage.
(b) Subsection (a) applies to private clubs but does not apply to
private functions that are not open to the public.
(c) Notwithstanding subsection (a)(1), it is lawful for a holder of
a retailer's permit to sell alcoholic beverages during a portion of the
day at a price that is increased from the usual, customary, or
established price that the permittee charges during the remainder of
that day as long as the price increase is charged when the permittee
provides paid live entertainment not incidental to the services
customarily provided.
Notice it doesn't say anything about giving discounts on products except the two for one deal. This is why liquor stores can give discounts on bulk wine purchases. People in Indiana just blanket that happy hour law over just about everything...
