I've been a member of this forum for a little over 9 years now. These days the DIY forum is filled with beautiful sculptural, shiny, pro-grade projects that make most of us drool.
Nine years ago, however, we had Ugly Junk! Projects that were thrown together cheaply from stuff people had laying around. In that vein I proudly present to you my own piece of ugly junk, my hastily assembled fermentation chamber!
Started with my old college dorm fridge and some extra shelving:
Add some rigid foam insulation sealed with foil tape:
Add doors:
Peek-a-boo!:
And since each door is about 24", and the shelves are 24" deep, I can use one door to divide the chamber so the fridge doesn't have to chill the whole space:
With the chamber divided I can have a lager fermenting in the closed side while another beer is being ramped-up for a diacetyl rest. The doors are a little leaky, but the fridge only needs to chill a few degrees below ambient so I'm not too concerned.
