Hey Guys,

So I am bottling a Belgian Strong Ale and a IIPA this weekend. Before I do, I wanted to see if anyone could help me out with the amount of priming sugar. Now I know there are several good carbonation calculators (http://hbd.org/cgi-bin/recipator/recipator/carbonation.html) but the problem is, my scale is in the mail! I could go with the normal 3/4 cup but I figured I'd try to get the right CO2 for the styles if I can.

So, based on the calculator, I want the following amounts of sugar:

Belgian Strong Ale(5gal, 8% ABV): 1.9-2.4 = 2.86 oz. (81.1g) - 4.20 oz. (119g)

Imperial India Pale Ale(5.5gal, 10.5% ABV): 1.5-2.3 = 1.96 oz. (55.7g) - 4.33 oz. (123g)

So first, what ammount would you guys suggest cause these ranges seem pretty wide?

And second, does anyone know what these ammounts are roughly translated to cups? As I said, I dont have a scale to measure this out by weight.

Also, I am using brewers corn sugar.

Thanks!

The number people throw around is 4 oz. corn sugar = 3/4 cup. This ends up being a rather crude estimate, but will likely work for what you want. You could always use your hydrometer to get a more precise measurement, but that's probably overkill.

There is a lot of variation in how different beers get carbonated, even within the same style, so a CO2 volumes range represents that. Most of the calcs pull their numbers from the BJCP style guides, which represent a relatively standard range for a particular style. If you don't have a sense of what you want specifically, just pick something in the middle.
