Hello:)

Anyone using the craftabrew Catalyst? So I got the cooled wort into the fermenter, added yeast, put the lid on it(plus bung and airlock) and put it in the basement. THEN I see the thing about removing the prefermentation trub before adding yeast:/ (I have two little kids and it's taken us over a year to get a batch going so admittedly Im never totally prepared for anything) Then I panicked and emptied the trub jar once, about an hour after the yeast was added.

Did I just ruin the whole batch? Does the yeast stay toward the top like bread yeast in warm water? Can anyone tell me it'll probably be ok? Eesh.

How often do you empty the trub jar in the first two weeks for best results?

Any advice or amusing anecdotes will be appreciated:) cheers
 
I don't use that, but I would assume there would still be enough yeast in suspension that you would be fine.

That said, can't hurt to order some yeast. If it shows up and you need it you have it. If you don't, you can save it for the next go.
 
Did you sprinkle the yeast granules on top?
How long ago?
Any signs of fermentation yet, a thin foam layer forming on top of the beer?

You may want to get another sachet of a similar yeast. A brew store nearby?
Do you happen to know what yeast it was?

On a side note, pre-fermentation trub can be left in the fermentor, it has no negative impact on the beer.

Don't empty that "trub jar" until the fermentation is complete, and you're ready to bottle the batch, about 14-21 days after pitching the yeast.
 
I use a Catalyst and I did this very thing with the first beer I brewed. The beer turned out great.

I agree about not emptying the trub jar until fermentation is complete. A little trick I have learned, if you notice you are getting more trub than what the jar holds, buy a bigger jar! Since I started using a bigger jar, there isn't even a worry about emptying the jar.

As an aside, if you don't already have the racking arm you can now buy for it, I would recommend it. It just makes things so much easier and there will be less worries. Whether or not they should include it automatically with the fermenter is for a different discussion, but I have found it well worth the $25.
