I'm pretty positive that these are just CO2 bubbles, but I guess you can't be too safe.

I had this in the primary for a week and then moved it to the carboy so I could free up the primary. At the time I took a reading and it was 1.020 as expected. It smelled like beer and tasted like alcohol. I smelled it last night and it certainly smells stronger than it did when I racked it. It this normal? I know, I should just RDWHAHB, but I don't have any homebrew yet. So I guess I need to RDWHACB?

Here, I fixed your link for you.

And no, that looks perfectly fine, RDWHACB. Or start another batch to get your mind off this one.

Thanks, I couldn't figure out how to embed the photo. I'm going to start a new brew, probably tomorrow night. Making the Brooklyn Pennant Ale '55. I think I'm going to do a brew as well on Thursday, any suggestions?

I've been obsessing over English ales lately, I'd brew a nice, sessionable mild.

I've got an ESB that's in primary right now, it's a little chewy at 1.018 FG. Tastes incredible, love that 1968/002 yeast.

That's nothing...heres my deception cream stout in secondary:

OUvv1.jpg

OG was 1.065, fermented in primary with Wyeast "Denny's Favorite 50" (#1450) for 3 weeks, yeast/krausen dropped out and stabilized at 1.021 for several days. I then transfered to secondary on tincture of cacao nibs and a vanilla bean steeped in vodka for several days...it all looked/smelled/tasted perfectly normal at transfer. Then the rafts started popping up the next day...this pic is taken 5 days after transfer.

I thoroughly cleaned (oxyclean free), then sanitized (starsan) everything that touched the beer. Maybe there was some sugars in the vanilla bean that got the yeasties all hot and bothered? It couldn't be the cacoa nibs; they were raw and unprocessed, plus they sat in the vodka for a couple days.

I've sniffed the airlock everyday and it's lightly sour-ish, but not really funky. Honestly, with all the additions, I really don't know if what I'm smelling is off...I just can't help thinking there's something wrong. Either way, I'm RDWHAHB...fugetaboutit; make more beer. I was just really looking forward to this stout for St. Pat's!

I wish I had a picture of some truly large (4 and 5 inch) floatie chunks I have had with some yeast. Beer was absolutely fine.

Op = beer ok
kc = beer ok

Fermentation is ugly. There is no getting around it. :D

Ugly, yet oddly compelling. :mug:

I'm kind of glad I use a bucket for brewing my beer. I never get to see the stuff floating on the surface until bottling day. By then it's gone. Thus I never get all worked up about what it "might be".

i don't like to look at krausen on some of them. i did one primary in my carboy and it was nasty looking. beer turned out great, BTW. haven't had a problem with buckets but i will keep "Edwort's Apfelwein" in my carboy from now on.

I've had one with bubbles like kc's and it happened after I added coconut. It looked like some giant spider put a web all over the top of the beer. Turned out fine.

Try using a top cropping strain next time. On good days, it looks like someone dumped a poop milkshake on top of your beer.

I didn't think there existed a sentence that would make me reconsider homebrewing...This one came close.

Yeah, it's pretty bad visually, but in my experience, top cropping strains (at least the English ones) tend smell absolutely delicious when they do their thing. I have a beer where I used 1318 and it smells like fresh baked bread everytime I open the door to the brew room.
