I’m going to the Yankee game and then was planning on heading to OMH.

I would like to go to BGH but might no be in the cards because it gets too crowded and I like to be there early.

Looks like I'm going to be in NYC for Zwanze day this year and so I'm looking for some advice on where I should go. I'll be staying near SoHo but don't mind traveling to either Spuyten Duyvil or Alewife. Spuyten Duyvil looks like a cooler space but significantly smaller. I'm not looking to spend the day drinking -- just a pour of Zwanze and another Cantillon and I'd be happy (so camping out in a bar all day is a deal-breaker). Any advice on which location might be the best fit?

I’m not sure how Alewife will work but I assume it’s similar to Spuyten where they pre-sell tickets for the zwanze keg at opening. So it is possible that in order to get a pour of Zwanze, you have to hang for a while for the keg to be tapped (3pm?).
I feel like I’ve been to Zwanzes where the keg kicked through pre-sales and where it lasted.

Major differences are that Fool’s Gold (and I’m assuming Alewife) opened at like 7am whereas Spuyten opened at 11? Spuyten only has 6 taps so not all the best stuff is tapped right away. They rotate as kegs kick. Alewife has a bunch of taps.
Both allow bottle sharing.
Both have a lot of space though most of Spuyten’s space is outdoors. Canopies are set up in case of rain.
Spuyten usually has a decent bottle last for onsite. Last year it was more fairly distributed as well. Not sure what the situation was at the other spot.

Fool's Gold did not pre-sell tickets at open last year, and I assume Alewife will probably run the same way. You just had to waltz up to the bar and ask the bartender for a chip at any point, and that chip would guarantee you the right to purchase a Zwanze pour. I got there a few hours after open and got a chip. People that arrived after me got chips. It was all pretty laid back. Plenty of Cantillon stuff on draft, plus lots of other good stuff.

Spuyten is a cool place, but like jammery said, most of it is outside. The indoor space is very limited, and cramped. If it ends up being a nice day though, that courtyard at Spuyten is really nice. Alewife has a very large indoor space, does have an outdoor area as well iirc, and also has significantly more beers available. Spuyten will likely have the vastly superior bottle list, but has far fewer and a much much smaller variety of draft options. Alewife also has a kitchen. I'm sure Spuyten will have some kind of food, but I don't know what. I've only ever had cheese and charcuterie there, and I think one time I had some soup.

If I'm in town for Zwanze, I'm going to Alewife. But I know others (raginasian238) are diehard Zwanze at Spuyten.

So, to summarize:

can someone give some guidance to tourist to NYC?

might be coming into town for the Eric Clapton show at the garden in oct. I've been to NYC twice, both times I was seeing a concert at the Prudential Center, so I rode the train back and forth. my concern is it's quite a walk from NJ Penn Station back to the hotel if it's raining

i need to find a hotel that is 1 - not hundred(s) of dollars a night, and 2 - easy to get to and from the garden

if i stay out towards union city / secaucus, the rates drop dramatically... but is there a direct train / bus / subway to and from the garden from that area?

I just have no idea what to do

OldMetalGuy Makes anywhere on the 1/2/3 A/C/E a possibility. If you don’t mind walking from herald square you’ll have even more options.

Not sure how long you’re going to be in town but I’d way rather stay somewhere in Manhattan than in seacaucus.

Stay in Manhattan, you'll regret the travel otherwise, especially if the concert is on a weekend. jammery is right though, airbnb is often very cheap.

Airbnb might be cheaper depending where you stay. I'd host you but box_social will also be here that weekend!

If you choose Secaucus, you can indeed take NJ Transit right into Penn Station. The problem with that is that you have to take NJT and you're then at their mercy timewise bc it doesn't run all night (but does run until 2ish, I think). Secaucus would be easier than Union City.
