Just posting this public service anouncement: with summer right around the corner, i never realized how fast "skunking" happened until today. I left my blonde ale in the sun for literally 3 minutes on my porch. When i came back for a sip i instantly smelled skunk and could taste it. It was faint, but definitely there. I always thought skunking happened over a long period of time, but it happens fast! Keep your beers safe and out of the sun!
 
When I used to teach classes I'd take a couple of bottles of Bud which I'd put out in the sun for about 20 min and then re-chilled. All I had to do was pop the cap and the class would react.
 
I was really surprised how fast it changed my beer. Needless to say ill be a lot more protective of my glass from now on lol
 
I always rub SPF-40 on the outside of my glass. Not really. But a bottle or glass jacket/koozie is always recommended for skunk prevention, besides keeping it cooler.
 
Haha if it has hops in it ive never tasted them. Weird as it sounds, in certain beers i actually dont mind a bit of it. Didnt work for the blonde ale i was drinking tho:/

I wonder if there's actually enough "hop" in Nat Light to skunk?

Maybe it is a real ale... No hops to skunk...

CAMRA also says "real ale" doesn't have hops in it. If it does, they call it beer. It was usually fermented 4 days, maybe five in olden days, then put in the cask to finish.

My dad was so stoked about my last homebrew he tried that he sent me 4 cases of bottles. I bottled him some beer in the clear bottles he sent (gave the rest of the clear to a friend for kombucha and saving the brown for actual bottling) but haven't had a chance to bring his bottles to him. Now I'm pretty sure they're skunked from sitting in my kegerator for a month or so after the keg change-outs. I don't even want to bring them to him now. I may go try one to check it out....

Does anyone know if there is any light spectrum that won't skunk your beer? IE, some type of lights you can have in a beer fridge that won't result in skunked beer if you use clear or green glass bottles? I don't generally bottle anymore, but occasionally will to share or to kick a keg if I need space.

Skunky beer sucks, but I'm not sure if my dad would even notice. I have a few friends who like the skunkiness and I may just pass the bottles in to them. I'm still trying to get rid of my green glass bottles but they eventually come back because everyone likes free beer!
 
Yeah the benefits of a keg are vast lol. Number one, no more sanitizing 60 bottles at a time and waiting 3 weeks....

Did they react to the skunk smell or just the fact that they wanted to chug it?

I'm assuming this was a college class.

Ultraviolet is what skunks beer. That's up past the BIV section of light (blue indigo violet). If you keep the light on the bottom end (RED) then it won't hurt it.
