****, I don't know. I just looked at a map and it was in the middle. I guess after living in Maine for four years I should realize "central" doesn't necessarily mean what it seems like it should mean.

I just looked it up and according to the Internet (which is never wrong) State College is still in central PA.

And if you look at a map it is pretty damn close to the actual center of the state.

Carry on. I will see myself out.

State College... So not close to anything. At all.
The PA struggle is real, my closest brewery is Yuengling. I drive bare minimum an hour to find a quality beer establishment.

You feel like taking a day trip, im always down for an excuse to visit Selinsgrove brewery.

Word. Is any of the stuff generally on tap at Bullfrog any good, or really just the bottles?

I worked in Williamsport for about 3 months so got to sample a good amount. On any given day I would say there's usually 1 really enjoyable tap, and maybe 1-2 that are decent. The guys who work the are also usually down to share bottles after hours.

I was at the Bullfrog last Saturday. Thought the Old Gold Kriek was pretty tasty. Lots of oak, not much cherry flavor. (for a Kriek.) Jong Bruin (Flanders Oud Bruin) was pretty good too. As Stakem said Selinsgrove Brewing is a great place to have a beer. Unparalleled atmosphere and pretty tasty beer. When Steves (the owner/brewer) IPA is on point, (batches vary) it's hard to beat for this area. Lots of Mosaic.

I don't know if you are into football, but its pretty much the only thing that matters at Penn State/State College in the fall.
Great tailgating, definitely recommended. And one more thing, go to Al's of Hampden/Pizza Boy brewing outside Harrisburg.
102 draft beers and always something good on tap. It's an hour ride for me one way but definitely worth it. Have fun, Kevin.

tehzachatak I live in Pittsburgh but my girlfriend's dad lives in State College, my parents live in Philly, and I travel to Harrisburg to work pretty often (typically drive out Tuesday morning and return Wednesday afternoon), so I get around. If you're ever free on a Tuesday night that I'm in Harrisburg, I'm down to drive the ~75 minutes to State College to open some beers (a few weeks ago I drove to a buddy's place in Philly on Tuesday night, crashed there, and drove back to Harrisburg on Wednesday morning). Also if you ever want to take a trip out to Pittsburgh there are quite a few up and coming breweries out here and I'll show you around.

If you are ever looking for someone to have a few beers with at Pizza Boy when you are in Harrisburg let me know. I am always looking for a reason to get over there to drink some beer.

I think he usually meets up with Nick when he comes through. At least I met Steve at Nick's house one night.

I picked up 3 bottles of Permasmile today. There were probably 12-15 cases on the floor and a handful more in the cooler but most people I saw there were either drinking a bottle there and/or taking multiple bottles with them.

Also brought home a few crowlers from Al's, a growler of Selinsgrove IPA and a 12pk of Spring House Lexicon Devil.

I still stand by my '**** Al's' stance. GTFO of here charging $30+ for simple ass fruited sours. Rents ain't that high in ******* Enola.

And...? Still too high a price.

I am not saying I disagree at all but it wasn't $30+. I didn't go wait in line and buy a bunch of bottles to trade. I like the food and beers at Als so I went over this evening and bought 3 bottles (1 for an extra, 1 for my cousin, and 1 for me).

I wish they would charge less but I enjoy the place so I will still support them. If the bottles were $20 I probably would buy a case or two but the fact of the matter is they still sold out or almost sold out in one day so the prices are still within the threshold of what people are willing to pay.

I had a conversation with my wife tonight and I said I would rather place an online order for shelf lambics than wait in line for 5 hours to pay more per bottle for American wild ales. I bought less bottles of Permasmile so I can place another order online or do an international trade with the money I didn't spend.

Gotcha and I agree with your last point. My reference to $30+ was more when they released 7 beers at once and people lined up the night before. At least a handful of those beers were above $30.

Those beers also sucked, or at least the ones I had did. I haven't had it but I have at least heard Permasmile is better than most of those.

all beers will be in 750ml bottles and aged on oak for a minimum of six months

What are you doing with my money?

Most of the S.K.U.L.L. proceeds will be used to fund the creation of all these beers. The other portion will be used to expand our Brewery! We are currently planning the buildout of 1500 sq. ft. of additional Taproom space - this will include a second bar, more bathrooms, a new floor, better live music staging, more funky furniture, and (along with it) the option to host private events for all of our awesome customers!

Membership includes the following:

2 bottles each of Seven different barrel-aged beers (750ml bottles) exclusive to the 2016 S.K.U.L.L.

One 2016 Barrel Chapter glass

Option to purchase extra bottles of each beer release (if applicable)

First rights to renew your membership for 2017

Can I split membership with a friend or significant other?

All memberships will be treated as individual memberships. We request that each membership be associated with only one person. Trustees are not considered members (unless they are also members themselves). However, what you do with your beer is up to you.

Where can I get my beers?

We'll only be releasing these beers directly from the Spring House Brewing Co. at 209 Hazel Street. You can pick them up from the brewery any time after each release, and we’re happy to hold them for you until May 31, 2017 (hold date subject to be pushed back if necessary, but will not be brought forward). Any questions can be directed to us at [email protected].

Can you ship the beer?

Sadly, we are not legally permitted to ship beers from Pennsylvania. The Barrel Chapter is currently designed for local residents, non-local residents who have someone picking up the beers for them, or non-local residents who plan to pick up the beers in one or more trips.

When can I pick up my beers and/or merchandise?

The beers will be released throughout the year, about one every month starting in Jun 2016. The beers tell us when they're ready, so it’s not possible to predict exact dates. Of course, we’ll notify members via email about the release date for each beer. If you can’t make that date, no problem at all - we’ll hold your beer until you’re able to pick them up (last possible pickup date: May 31, 2017, or later if announced by email).

We hope to have merch (glassware) ready for pickup in June 2016. We're aiming for June, but if memberships are still coming in on April 31, 2015, we can't place our order until after that date, and glassware delivery can sometimes be more than four weeks. We'll keep members posted either way.

How long will you hold my beers?

We'll hold any and all of your beers until May 31, 2017. Anything leftover will be considered forfeited, and likely be sold to 2017 Barrel Chapter members.

I’m not local, but would like to join anyway. Can I just pick up all my beers at once?

If you’re OK waiting until the end of the year to pick up all of your beers, we’re happy to hold them for you. Keep in mind that certain releases will be seasonally-timed, but if you don’t mind the wait, neither do we. You can also schedule a couple pickups (instead of seven) over the course of the year. Please note that final pickups must be by May 31, 2017.

Can I send a trustee to pick up my beers for me?

Yes. On the 2016 S.K.U.L.L. Barrel Chapter Membership product page, you can specify the full name and email address of the person who will be picking up your beers. Please know that, in doing this, you are authorizing the release of all Barrel Chapter items to this person. We cannot take responsibility for ensuring this person's trustworthiness, and are not liable for what happens to the items once they leave the brewery.

Do I have to designate a trustee now / can I change my trustee?

You don't have to designate a trustee during checkout, but we recommend that you do if you plan on having someone else pick up beers for you. You can definitely add a trustee or change your trustee at a later date as well. This year, we hope to allow members to make this change online, but you can also email us at[email protected]. This can be done anytime during your membership. Please keep in mind that we only allow 1 trustee per membership, and we ask that you notify us of any trustee changes at least 48 hours in advance of that person coming by the brewery to pick up your bottles.

Will non- S.K.U.L.L. Chapter members be able to buy these beers?

We're structuring the Barrel chapter so that we bottle about as many beers as we have memberships. If we do produce additional bottles, we'll contact S.K.U.L.L. members about priority purchasing from the brewery. We don't anticipate selling any Barrel chapter beers to the general public, unless bottles remain unsold after being offered to members.

How did you come up with the price of $220?

Because members are taking a chance on beers that don't exist yet and supporting our creativity, we offer Barrel Chapter beers at a discount. Next year's beers, aged in oak a minimum of six months, would retail to the general public for $18-$25/bottle; we are offering them for $15/bottle. We came up with the full membership price based on the following:

$15 discounted price for each bottle of beer (retail value $18-$25)

$10 for 1 Barrel Chapter glasses

Online processing fees (flat rate plus % of online sale)

Can I cancel or get a refund for my membership?

Yes, if at any point you are unsatisfied with your membership, we will issue a refund for the remaining bottles. This will be a pro-rated refund.

We hope you can make it!

Cheers,
Spring House Brewing Company

My first thought when I read about the new Spring House barrel beers was damn those some awesome.

Then I came to my senses and remembered that they added adjuncts to pretty much every beer the first time around we all remember how that turned out.

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

I won't be joining this round.

came into this thread to post this. i want so badly to join because i love this brewery and want to support them. but i completely blew $200 on them the first time around. there's no acknowledgement that the previous barrel society was a complete failure. no 'we learned from our mistakes', etc.

sorry guys.

They learned to let people have more time to pick up their beer. That's a success right?

Ugh. I hope these aren't bad..........Splitting a membership 3 ways, so at least I won't be out the whole 2 bills if they are

What has me worried is the *minimum of 6 months* I hope to goodness they are letting these sit longer and hope that half of them are already in barrels. Why bother if you are pulling stuff at 6 months.

One thing I learned from the Bruery with their Chrono series is that 6 months is the minimum but things really hit stride at a year and 18 months!
