Yeah springhouse doesn't deserve your hard earned money. They are almost the Wurst.
I am the biggest sucker ever. I didn't join last time. I was on the page and decided not to last minute. Ended up trading for just about all of them, most of which were massive turds. Yet here I am, wanting to join...sigh. The beers just sound super interesting. They did last time, too, though.

My springhouse barrel aged beer club experience last year was a rollercoaster ride of frustration. From excitement and anticipation to disappointment, regret and anger.

Some of the beers had no detectible barrel presence.
At least 1 was acknowledged as infected and became vinegar.
The coffee one tasted like vegetal matter.
When they released the info about the wine barrel aged saisons and how the wine and a nonsouring strain of brett was responsible for them being sour, I facepalmed.

When just about all hope was lost, they gave us that gem of a beer: Pappy Bloodlust for free. That beer was downright perfect for what it was. It also showed us they were ******* capable of making an awesome barrel aged product.

Have they learned? Are these going to be better or was that single bottling just a fluke? Why are the beers cheaper this time around? Are the barrels just being reused from last time?

I have too many questions, uncertainty and overall lack of trust in this brewery to just blindly give them money again. I hope they prove me wrong and all the beers are outstanding this time around. I have some local friends who love their nitch market of excessive adjuncting so without having to roll the dice with my own money ill likely get to try some of these.

Spring House Barrel Society Round 2 isn't off to a great start.

Is there a Matt Pike on in this thread? I received his eventbrite tickets for his entery into the barrel reserve society. o_O

I didn't even sign up so I am not sure how they botched that one.

Likely because you copied/posted the details of your invite email in this thread (or the thread on BA.) The signup was linked to your email and was your personal invite to get into the club. So, someone who didnt get an invite, used yours and just missed the part where it showed your email address in the form field (or they did it purposely hoping to correct it after the fact.)

Well this is awkward.

Oh, well now I feel sheepish.

I would like to apologize to Spring House for rushing to judgement and assuming there was an error when I received the email regarding someone else signing up for their barrel program.

I made the mistake of posting the invite that was sent to me personally. I shouldn't have posted the link and I shouldn't have rushed to judgement for the email I received.

This thread needs something to talk about other than springhouse.

Part of my new years resolution is to get out there and give some semi-local new breweries a visit for the first time.

I havent been to any in the area that have opened in the last 2 years. (Except for Zeroday which I wasnt all that impressed with but that might have been because they were still working through opening pains.)

What else is new and worth checking out in the area? So far on my radar I have Millworks, Boneshire and Ever Grain.

Collusion out of York is a solid local brewery. Not quite central but Forest & Main seems to fly under the radar. Mad Chef is Lancaster so that counts as central PA in my book.

Every time I see a post in this thread I get excited and then realize they're all about breweries in Harrisburg or east. :(

Good Intent Cider in Bellefonte is pretty solid. They had a pretty nice citra hopped cider when I was there a few weeks ago. Still no particularly worthwhile beer I've found in srs business central PA besides Selinsgrove and bullfrog tho. Has anyone been to Elk Creek in Millheim? Still haven't made my way out there but I've heard reasonably good things.

Big Hill is another solid cider producer, everything is dry and balanced. Ive enjoyed everything Ive had from them but their farmhouse cider was my favorite so far.

Had a few growlers and bottles from Elk Creek. Eh...not bad but nothing super special. If youre in the area I would visit them, otherwise seems like a long trip for just ok english style beer.

Forgot about highway manor. Have had a few of their beers on draft and they all seemed overly acidic and were not my favorites. But had their sayjohn in a bottle and it was one of the better saisons I had all year. Really balanced, not overly bright but still tart.

I live in State College, so Elk Creek's pretty close.

Agree, the strawberry and blueberry beers were too much like drinking vinegar but the saison i had was one of my favorite new beers of last year.

Ever Grain is pretty solid. It is very similar in all aspects to Troegs though, IMO. (Even most of the bartenders work at Troegs) Offer crowlers to go.

Boneshire is solid also, I imagine you are familiar with Alan's brews though.

Millworks has some work to do based on when I was there. Great food though.

If you ever go down to York, Collusion is good, and they have like 20+ of their beers on tap. Also do crowlers.

Isn't the head brewer at evergrain a former brewer at troegs?

Thanks for the info Seth. I ended up swinging by Ever Grain and holy **** you werent kidding. It truly is like a mini version of Troegs.

I need to get over and see Alan's new setup next.

Does anyone need any stryo shippers? I was using them to store beer but now that my wine rack is installed I don't have a need for them.

Free but you have to come pick them up at my house.

I live put near Williamsgrove Raceway between Mechanicsburg and Dillsburg.
