Hello,

I've been asked to make a clone of Terrapin's Monks Revenge from their side projects. They are pretty good about listing what was put in it and what the S.G. etc, are but unfortunately I have no experience forming my own recipes yet, I've merely modified other good recipes to my own liking. I was wondering if someone might be willing to help me figure out the proportions, etc to use? Here is a link to Terrapin's page.

I'd appreciate any help I can get. Thanks.

I've never had it, but from the description, I'd guess the grain bill looks something like:
6.5# 2-row
6.5# pilsner
0.5# munich
0.5# aromatic
0.5# C20
0.25# acidulated
1.5# dextrose
mashed low and long to help with the high attenuation
I'd guess the hopping is bittered with magnum, and late hopped with the rest. Hopefully someone else can help out a little more.

I wish I could help out a bit more on the recipe. Please post how it turns out if you brew it. Monks Revenge goes down like an 8%er. Way to easy to drink...Delicious to. I've thought about trying to clone it as well. Good luck to you!!!

dcp,

I took your advice and here is what I have. I modified things a little to get me closer to the 1.082 starting gravity that they call out on the website. The one thing I'm very questionable on is the amount of hops for dry hopping. Any advice?

oh right, forgot to mention that was with 65%eff. terrapin is getting like 89% attenuation on this so you may need to add some sugar during fermentation to bring it down, on top of mashing low, aerating like crazy, and making a huge starter.
As for the dry hopping, I think IIPAs usually use at least 2-4oz so you're probably ok. Personally, I'd make the 60min adds FWH to soften the bitterness a little and I'd probably move the amarillo til later in the boil to get more aroma/flavor out of it. I think the rest looks fine, but I haven;t had it so I can't say for sure.

dcp,

Thank you very much for all of your help. I'm going to brew this in the next couple weeks and I'll definitely let everyone know how it turns out.

Have you tried emailing them? They might be able to give you some good insight. Just let them know your recipe and ask for suggestions to getting closer.

acid, I'd swap in caravienne for the C20, keep it all belgian. I think I'm also going to give something similar a try in the next few weeks too

Terrapin has given out recipies to homebrewers in the past... i +1 this. shoot them an email. Spike is very cool!

I have talked to several terrapin sales reps through a local bar. Ive sent an email to the sales rep who said spike is very busy right now, but will get recipes to me very soon. Will definitely let you know when i hear from them!

i am drinking this right now. On vacation and happened to find Monks Revenge in Destin FL. Stoked.

nootay, let us know when you hear from Spike. I think I'm going to brew this on the 24th of July (busy weekends until then) but once you hear from Spike I'll gladly try both.

NNatic, what did you think of it?

In all honesty I do not like belgians. That yeast just kills me ... i try to enjoy them often because they are highly regarded but they are just apparently not for me.

I LOOOVE Terrapin beers so I am sure that belgian lovers would really enjoy this but it is just okay for me.

I am going to brew the clone of Rye Pale Ale (Jamil Show did a can you brew it) as i think it will be a good beer to have on tap at the house.

So I brewed this last weekend and everything went well. The only thing I am questioning is my S.G. numbers. I accidentally dropped my refractometer so I fear that it is now out of calibration. I plan on doing at least 3 -4 more days in the primary then a full two weeks in the secondary so we'll see in about a month how it turned out. Stay tuned.

So I have some updates. Not sure if anyone is still following this or not but I brought a sample of this to my friend today and he was very pleased. This was an uncarbonated sample but it still went over well. I'm going to go home and bottle this soon.

As far as the S.G. numbers, I've ordered a new hydrometer to check my refractometer but I'm afraid it is toast. This beer "finished" at 7.8% Brix or 1.031 even after I put more yeast, raised the temp, everything I could think of. We'll see what the actual results are once I get the hydrometer in.

All in all I would definitely suggest brewing this. I'll let you all know how closely it matches Terrapins once I get it carbed up and get a Terrapin in front of me.
