ok, sounds good... good think im bottle conditioning the dennys, so i can let it sit longer. I really like my smoked rye.. i think it turned out really well for the first run of that.

jhenderson, as soon as i make it up to cidah's ill be drinking yours.. just every day something is going on now that 'summer' is here. sadly my car wont be fixed today so i may have to borrow my moms or bothers to get up to you cidah if i have time.

Haha glad he liked it! He loved my carapils thats for sure. Yah it had cocoa nibs. Wasnt super pronounced flavor. Yours was so amazing smelling! Im going to do a porter with a touch of belgian dark sugar as well. What was the abv on the porter. I tend to like stovepipe and eddie fitz from great lakes. Both are dryer hoppier porters. I use magnum and norther brewer hops in mine. Around 40ibu

It doesn't look like the keg will be picked up this time, my friend lives is Manlius next time he heads home ill see if he can grab it. For the time being feel free to use it, he doesn't go home often.

Yeah he is a brew hound for sure. Prefers craft brews haha!

I can't recall the exact abv off hand but it is up there. I think it was supposed to be around 6.7 but I was more efficient than I thought and got to like 7.6% + or - 3 points at most. If you have a couple of those, you will know it. Doesn't taste fusely though, so it sort of sneaks up.

Man now I am thirsty for one of those porters with this quasi cool weather

brehuh - no sweat. Let me know the when and we will figure it out.

I would take it but my wife discovered all my kegs recently and wasn't too thrilled (she took a head count ha!). She is happy when stuff flows from the tap, but doesn't seem to understand how it gets there....

Yours was so amazing smelling!
That aroma is what I like about this porter - it is like a roasty chocolaty cup of smooth coffee. I could drink it at breakfast, if it weren't for that whole having to drive to work thing ;)

Where's your sense of adventure? ;-)

I'm happy to report that my first all grain batch is happily bubbling away in the carboy! I started off with a mild Pale Ale so my process results will show through. All in all, I think the whole thing went well. I look forward to start chipping away at my pile of grain in the basement now :)

I added some pics of my system here if you're interested.

FYI, I checked with Sunset Hyrdo and Homebrewing about their CO2 prices. They quoted my $10 for a 5lb and $19 for a 20lb. On the phone the guy I talked to did say that they're CO2 setup needs servicing right now though so until that happens they don't have CO2.

good job and congrats, i just did my 16th all grain batch today... :).. pipeline if flowing nicely.. and i have 4 kegs full (well almost (couple of them are 1/2 full due to me drinking :p)

on deck next week is a black ipa.. im still tinkering with the recipe right now.

I'm getting to work on my pipeline, I've been without homebrew for too long. Hopefully the move to kegging helps me get ahead finally because I'm always thirsty.

Brewed bm's blue moon clone today. Hit everything good.

Had a moose drool and amarillo pale cidah.

Moose drool was delicious, had no idea at first what it was as the lady grabbed it for me while mashing in. Good strong malt backbone, very crisp full bodied. Loved the hop. A tad under carbed but still a solid 8 of 10. Very pleasent easy to drink. Would like the recipe.

The amarillo pale is my style. Strong, clean, crisp aroma, mouthfeel and drinkability. Very pleased wit the aroma. All around a fantastic session beer. Would be happy to purchase and drink at the bar.

Just wait till you get to work to have one. 

Very cool set up! What is even nicer is now you will be able to take a little time and refine your process now that you have dedicated equipment - I bet you will be above 70% in no time.

Now just time for the pipeline to be addressed :)

Good stuff!

Jhenderson - will get you the moosedrool - there is something oddly delicious about that beer. When I first tried it at maybe 5 weeks I didn't like it. Then a carmel flavor or somehting developed and it got more complex. Now I am glad I have 2 cases of the stuff. Will PM the recipe.

Now we just need to go in on a bale of amarillo hops! I would love to keep that IPA on tap all year. House IPA ;)

Nice work on BM's - mine reaches week three this weekend... will let you know how mine turned out in a few weeks.

cidah, drinking the porter right now, smells good like some chocolate.. for some reason im getting green apple smell. hmm?

for some reason im getting a funky flavor, but that might just be me.. im not huge into drinking porters its abit more hoppier than i remember for the style.. i should get into this style. but over all its pretty good... just not use to the style. right now this is my least favorite of the ones you have traded, (not bad, i just dont know the style all that well, and am in the air still if i like it)

No worries - it might not be for you ;) This recipe is actually a midwest recipe that is 5 star rated by over 25 reviewers, so I know quite a few people like it ha! (wish I could take credit for the recipe myself)

I think you are confusing the specialty malt astringency for hops. This brew has 25 IBUs, which is the lowest IBU rating for the style (robust porter; 25-55 IBUs). I suspect that the black patent is giving some astringent bitter that you might be confusing with hop astringency. Think black coffee esque. There is a lot of black patent in this recipe.

I am quite surprised that this one wasn't a hit with you guys though - I love this stuff! I also have friends and family specifically ask me to brew this one, which makes it even more odd.

However that is the nature of taste...That is... unless you had a funky beer (but I doubt that).

Thanks for being candid though - that is the only thing I ask of you guys.

sorry I have been lazy with getting back to you guys on the tastings - my buddy just gave me a 6er plus a couple bottles of belgium (westmalle and st bernhards 12 - these are strong!). Based on my most recent brew I wanted to try the belgiums out.

:) yeah, i think it was the black patent.... who knows.. overall it was not bad, but like you said... just not my cup of tea...

its funny on what people have for taste profiles and how different they are.

still looking forward to the stout, moose drool, and the AB

btw, astringent was what i was looking for, i was just having a brain fart while writing that :p..

Its funny too. Because here i go and brew a big Belgian quad and just tried similar version of the stuff last night (I think). I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it either. Now I am like... crap... haha. Hopefully my brew turns out better than the ones I tried. They were sort of hard to drink. Very high alcohol and very different flavors in the brew. for the first time in a long time I found it very difficult to finish a 22!! And I know those Belgians weren't cheap...

hopefully you get some good tastings out of what is left - but don't pull any punches! :)

that is the way i am with the saisons right now, i bought two saisons one from ommegang (hennepn) had that last night as well, i found it difficult to drink... im on the fence of if i like the style or not.. it was tough drinking it plus it was pushing 8%, right now that one has to much clove, and spices in it... (i love the dryness of it tho)

oh your going right in the corner for the punches :p... naw im really looking forward to that stout... just waiting for a nice day to drink it, i love stouts almost as much as IPAs. and i have never had moose drool, so that should be interesting.

Cidah did i hurt your feelings with that review :p... lol

Ha - not at all - I have a much thicker skin than that.

By co-brewer and I were talking last night actually and I said something like. "You know, it is cool to let people try the beer we brew, but truthfully, I know whether the stuff is good or not." I know we have brewed some good beer, as you guys have as well.

I just wanted to make sure that if you didn't like 6 of the beers i sent over, you told me how each one didn't work for you, and not some fluff.

To add to the irony of this porter business - I just gave the porter with a few others to a friend of mine - just emailed me a few minutes ago. He is a brewer with a good palate:

Whrut 56 porter review (if you rename it it is your recipe right? )

"slight smokey flavor, hints of coffee and dark chocolate, but not too dark. very good."

Then he asked for the recipe...

lol, so it must be just my taste profile did not care for it :p.... o well :)

isnt homebrewing that what it comes down too? whether you like it or not.. not what other people think... but its always good to see reviews on your beer just to maybe change or enhance your beer! I love this exchange idea, it gives you ideas from other peoples perspective to see what would be good and what needs to change if you cant pin-point something.

hopefully this weekend i can get up there and pick up jhendersons, my car got a new windshield yesterday, now i have to get an inspection.

all this talk is making thirsty for a beer :/ but its to early have i have stuff to do... ill drink that moose drool tonight and let you know how it is!

btw, i wanted ask anyone have you brewed a black ipa yet? i have a recipe i have created but want to have it looked over before i go do it this weekend

tell me what you think about this one

these numbers are weird because i adjusted for efficiency of 83%, what i really am tryin to figure out is that too much debitter black or should i keep it at that or go more?

OG 1.067
FG 1.017
SRM 30.1
IBU 86 (might be lower a couple points once i go check my cascades)

9.04lb 2row
1.58lb vienna
.75lb de-bittered black malt
.68lb 60L
.45lb carapilz

~1oz warrior (15.8%) @ 60min
~.5oz amerillo (8.2%) @ 45min
~.75oz centennial (8.0%) @ 30min
~.5oz Amerillo (8.2%) @ 15min
~.5oz Cascade (7.5%) @ 10min
~.5oz Cascade (7.5%) @ 5min
~1oz Centennial (8.0) @ 0min
~.5oz amerillo (dryhop)
~.5oz centennial (dryhop)
~1oz palisades (dry hop) ~these are in place of glacier hops (dont have any)

mashing at 153 ~ 60min

Since the de-bittered black malt is just for coloring you might want to go on the low end (.5lb?)

If I remember right that is basically all it is used for but you will get some roasty flavoring too. I did read somewhere that you can use Carafa III de-husked in place if de-bittered black malt (roasty, astringent etc) with less black malt character but get the color change.

This is all "read" information though, and not personal experience.

The high gravity Belgians need to grow on you a bit (if they ever do). I wasn't thrilled with them for awhile but now I'm absolutely hooked. Cidah, did you try the St Bernardus?

Yup - St Bernardus 12 I believe it was interesting, but I gathered that it was a bit of an acquired taste. Dark fruity flavoring. I mean it isn't like most folks like scotch when they drink it the first time ;)

I found myself appreciating the unique flavors, just not sure if they all belonged in the same mix.

If I don't acquire the taste for them after my 5 gallon share of westy 12, then I never will :)

i have been contemplating that for a while now.. either .75 or .5lb, what was the srm of your porter that we were talking about, i want it like jet black like that.

ok, that might be a bit high.. lol... i like the 30 SRM if i drop to .5lb it drops to 24... (which is just over brown to black)
