I brewed my first batch, a molasses sweet stout, last night and tossed it into primary. Everything went well and I was beyond careful with sanitation. After 7 hours, I was getting bubbles (1 per 3-5 seconds) coming out of the vodka my blowoff tube is sitting in. Happy day.
I was so excited that I took a few pictures. When I looked at them, I noticed that what was on top of the fermenter was not what I have come to think of as krausen, but more of a thick sludge that starts from about 2-3 cm beneath the surface of the wort. This stuff was present within 7 hours after pitching the yeast.
Is this something that I should be concerned about?
