I brewed my first batch, a molasses sweet stout, last night and tossed it into primary. Everything went well and I was beyond careful with sanitation. After 7 hours, I was getting bubbles (1 per 3-5 seconds) coming out of the vodka my blowoff tube is sitting in. Happy day.

I was so excited that I took a few pictures. When I looked at them, I noticed that what was on top of the fermenter was not what I have come to think of as krausen, but more of a thick sludge that starts from about 2-3 cm beneath the surface of the wort. This stuff was present within 7 hours after pitching the yeast.

Is this something that I should be concerned about?

Thank you all so much. I kinda figured that I was concerned over nothing, but you all really helped put my mind at ease. Thanks!

You will see all sorts of hidious weardness in the krausen. Every yeast is different and every temperature is different. Some look god-awful and some look pretty normal.

What you have is "normal" so it's all good.
