So, here's the story.

My wife is the music director at our church, and I play guitar for her most Sundays. Six months ago or so, a new family started coming to church and the oldest kid in the family had started playing guitar. He got all excited that I was playing an electric guitar at church. At some point he was getting ready to play something at a talent show at his school, so his mom asked me to work with him a little bit to help him out. Cool. No problem. So I gave the kid a few tips and helped him feel a little more confident about what he was playing.

The dad found out I brewed and enjoyed beer and said he'd buy me a beer sometime. I told him it wasn't necessary and that I was happy to help the kid out.

Months went by and we would see the family at church and I talked to the kid occasionally about what he was working on playing.

Then today, after the service was over, the dad comes over to me and says he got a bunch of bottles and wondered if I could use them for my homebrew. I was like, yeah sure I can always use some more bottles. Then he says they need some cleaning and whatever, but he had them in his car.

Turns out they are 16 oz. Grolsch bottles. :rockin: And he got them for practically nothing at an auction over the weekend.

Anyway, I now have 63 Grolsch flip-top bottles. :ban:

I've wanted to stalk craigslist for deals on bottles and other brewing stuff, but just haven't had the spare cash to go for it. Never thought I'd score brewing gear just by going to church.

They are pretty filthy and the gaskets are in bad shape. But a good PBW soak and some new gaskets should do the trick.

BAM! Awesome score. Just goes to show you that when you treat people right, good things happen. Enjoy your Grolsches - they're the gift that keeps on giving.

great score! I used to use swing tops exclusively for years. 16oz-2L. then I got a great bench capper. I need to dig out my old swing tops now.

Did I do the math right?

http://www.northernbrewer.com/shop/...ing/bottle-caps-closures/grolsch-gaskets.html

According to that link, I can get 4 packs of 25 gaskets for $1.50 less than a single package of 100 gaskets. They might want to look at that pricing again.

Anyway, can anybody with experience tell me which gaskets would be better between the ones from the Northern Brewer link above or these other ones from MoreBeer?

Obviously, the ones from Northern Brewer are cheaper. But they look like regular old rubber. The ones from MoreBeer look like the neoprene ones that I read about in another thread. I wish I could just get my hands on them to see them in person before buying them.

Hey Signpost, just wondering what you came up with on which style to go with?

Well, I haven't gotten around to doing anything quite yet.

The fall semester was a busy one, my daughter just had her first birthday, and I was sick with a cold/flu/plague off and on (mostly on) for about two and a half months.

Whenever I get around to doing something, I'll try to remember to post back here.

I love those Grolsche bottles. I think I have 37 of them.
I like the beer, too. Been doing a Grolsche clone and like it way better than the original.

Well, I scored again. Somebody I know is moving and taking that as an opportunity to clean house. They used to brew, but haven't done it in quite a while.

Anyway, they gave me:

2 - 6 gallon carboys with the tops to use a siphon
a 5 gallon bucket with lid
a bottle tree
a bottle capper

All for the price of visiting, hanging out, and chatting for a bit.

Pretty awesome.
