I brewed an Oktoberfest recipe about 2 months ago and did an experiment with wyeast german ale and oktoberfest lager yeast. It's amazing to see the differences and similarities: same color, same head retention; more carbonation in the ale; lager is smoother and has more malt flavor; both are awesome in my opinion and my wife actually took 2 sips of the lager (she normally only takes one sip of my beers).

Anyway, you should try a side by side comparison some time if you do a bigger than normal batch; it helps me being a novice homebrewer to tune the recipes/ingredients.

Interesting, I've seen a number of yeast experiments, but never a ale vs lager one. I did two batches of porter, one with Nottingham and one with Cal V Ale. Didn't detect any difference, but they were porters with a lot of caramel.

This is a real good way to learn about different yeasts.
You can use 20 different yeasts and come up with 20 different beers.
