This is my all-time favorite American Amber Ale. Ive been searching for many years for something that I like better, but still havent found it. :) Hands down the most perfect balance of hops.

anyway, anyone ever come across a good recipe for a Red Tail clone?

Here is one:Extract recicpe.

OG = 1.052 FG= 1.013
IBU 26 SRM- 13
ABV= 5%

.75 lb. 2 row pale malt
3.5 oz. Victory malt
1.0 lb. Crystal 60L
2.3 lbs. (1kg) light DME
3.3 lbs. (1.5 kg ) light LME (add with 15 minutes left in boil)
4AAU Cluster hops (60 minutes) .5 oz. @ 8% alpha acid
4 AAU cascade hops (30 minutes) .8 oz. @5% alpha acid
.33 oz. cascade hops (whirlpool)

Wyeast 1056 \WLP 001

That looks like a good recipe--

I'm going to be brewing something similar tomorrow. My problem is yeast. I didn't have any Irish Ale yeast or any California Ale yeast (one of my favorites), so I picked up soem WL English Ale yeast.

I've used this before in bitters, but never for this style. Anyone have any thoughts?? It leaves a bit of residual sweetness if I remember right, which would be ok by me.

I like that strain or Wyeast 1098. You may want to add some additional bittering hops (just a little) and make a good yeast starter but you will get a very clear beer with that yeast.

This is going to be a pretty hoppy beer anyway (about 36 IBU's). Perhaps I'll boost it to 40.

I'm using Centennial for my bittering hops.

thanks man!

I woulda thought there would be more hops in there tho based on hoppieness of the Red Tail im enjoying right now :) But I guess homebrewing it all about tweaking things till you get the perfect balance that you enjoy.

does anyone else like Red Tail as much as me or am I nuts? :)

Hey this post is REALLY old, but I completely agree about Red Tail. I am not an amber fan (usually too much caramel for me, not enough toast) but I love Red Tail. How did your batch turn out? Did you find a recipe that got you close?
