When I was a craft beer noob back in 2009 I had an Old Curmudgeon and absolutely HATED it. I avoided it for many years and eventually had another one last year and I now like it. That's taste bud change for you.

Anyone else experience something like that?

got a Brooklyn Monster once.. a decade plus ago. my first foray in to barleywines. it tasted, to me, like drinking straight liquid fire. scathingly hot.

barleywine is probably now my second favorite style behind stout (pick a variation, any variation).

My taste changes so much. I hate styles that I used to love (huge stouts mostly) and love styles I used to hate like rauchbier. Really wish more people enjoyed rauchbier, I've been tuning my recipe and I wish I could brew it more often but no one likes it .

Brooklyn Monster was the first Barleywine I ever tried and I agree with your assessment. Not the best introduction to the style, but they can be ******* great.

That's because rauchbiers ******* suck.

:p

it's mostly the opposite for me - beers i remember really enjoying 6-7 years ago i either find to be "meh" or actively dislike. i find this is especially true of the bigger beers of yore (barleywines, imp stouts, strong ales, etc)

I'm like you in a way. I have trouble drinking big beers anymore. As I keep getting older, I keep going away from sweetness more and more. I used to love BA Barleywines, but don't even seek them out anymore. I'll enjoy a BA Stout from time to time, but only it is on the dryer end of the spectrum, or if there is a little roast to balance out the sweetness. I've really just settled in to only wanting West Coast style hoppy beers, Saison, and Belgian Sours.

Maybe it's because I don't do the 2oz pour at a bottle share thing? I guess I'm doing it wrong. Don't even care though.

So how do you get your badges?

Yeah, as I've gotten older my tastes have leaned a lot more towards the simple, delicate, subtle end of the beer spectrum.

And there's always High Life.

It's like we're twins.

They do have a version that's fermented in the egg. It looks like dirty dish water, but it actually tasted better than the last couple of batches I've had of the non-egg version.

I've had regular Blue Dot on tap at the brewery that looked like dirty dish water. Tasted similar.

Actually, that's offensive to the dish water.

I don't understand what the hell happened to HotD. When they actually get it right, it's so damn right.
I don't know that anything "happened" to them. I really feel that they just got passed up by newer, better breweries.

I'll refrain from going over all of the reasons I'm not that big a fan of them for the millionth time.

They're not my favorite brewery or anything, but I still like stopping in for a beer and the god-tier brussels sprouts when in Portland.

I just don't remember so much inconsistency with their beers in the past. [shrug]

Apparently I need to pay a visit to try these brussel sprouts from the Stone.

Speaking of Hair of the Dog I just got an e-mail about Maja being on sale. http://www.bringonthebeer.com/beers/hair-of-the-dog-brewing-maja-2017

At first I thought it was a decent price but then I saw it was a 12oz bottle. Sure, 20 bucks for a 12 oz, sign me right the **** up. I can only assume it's due to the maple syrup and vanilla in the beer...

That's not much more than what HotD was selling them for at the brewery.

And yes, the beetus is strong with that one.

What the **** is up with this dig in the BotB email?

This Bourbon Barleywine was brewed with maple syrup and aged for a year in Bourbon barrels loaded with vanilla beans. The result is nothing short of what you'd expect from Hair of the Dog (read: Mindbogglingly good).

I can hear the haters now, crying out from their mama's basements all across the internet.

Meanwhile, you and I will enjoy sipping on this finely tuned Bourbon Maple Vanilla Barleywine from one of the most esteemed brewers found anywhere in the world.

What the **** is this guy talking about?
