I was going to suggest they use their extra capacity for contract brewing, but then I remembered they canned S.S. Cream a few years ago.

So I have nothing to add to this conversation.

It is one of my favorite old breweries. Love Old Brown Dog and Finest Kind. Sad to see it happen this way.

Just started working with Night Shift recently too I believe.

The company’s financial models were based on 20 years of consistent growth but the explosion of microbreweries has led to changing dynamics in the marketplace. This dramatic shift occurred just as Smuttynose committed to a major infrastructure investment with the construction of the new production facility. As the turmoil in the marketplace stabilizes, Smuttynose, a trusted brand with strong consumer loyalty, can regain its footing with a major infusion of capital.
And people wonder why some breweries are reluctant to expand even when their product is in high demand. Laying out that much capital puts you in a bad position if interest wanes soon after. It's why I always laughed when stupid beer people say "just expand" when they can't get something they want.

I wonder if they've be silently withdrawing from certain markets. Because I can't recall seeing anything remotely new from them in a long time, despite them having been distributed in MI for many years now.

I talked to my beer guy and he just hasn't been ordering it. It sits and clogs up the shelves because it's not new and exciting. He showed me a few cases or their blueberry Berliner that he bought at the beginning of the summer. Same with green flash, he only orders them when he gets low on what he has which isn't often.

The only Smuttynose beer I ever really liked was their Baltic Porter. I personally haven't bought there stuff in at least five years. I guess I'm not surprised they are done.
I really only buy the Imperial Stout, but I found a case on clearance last year for $2/bomber and haven't needed to look for it since.

Pliny The Younger is the one "legacy tick" that's still gnawing at me to get done, but I just don't know if it's ever going to happen. The only feasible way I could see to guarantee ticking it at this point would be to drive up to Philly for some announced event at Monk's Cafe or whatever.

There's zero chance of you traveling to SF during beer week? It's super easy to get out here.

Was pissed when I had just missed it in SD two years ago. I just don't have it in me to take a vacation day to go to Philly for an IPA that I'll probably only somewhat like

It's just not a great time of year for me to head out for a weekend trip, being right during the spring semester. Being a professor means having a lot of time off, but it coming at fairly specific times of year and unlike with other jobs it's not possible to just use a few vacation days here or there to take a random trip. Doing a Friday-Sunday weekend trip out to the west coast is something I'd only probably do to tick a mountain climb, not a beer.

Easy-ish one.

Come back to San Diego, it is fairly easy to find, especially if you are free during the day.

Portland is an option. You can hit Mt. Hood for some mountain action.
