So i just ordered my first Kombucha kit today, and I'm wondering if it is possible to ferment my kombucha in the same 6.5 gal plastic fermentation buckets as i do my ales. Also being a noob, how well does basic star san do for sterilizing kombucha fermentation vessels. I don't want to harm the mother with acidic cleansers.

Thanks in advance.

Food grade #2 HDPE is supposed to be fine. #5 PP is more questionable. Personally I wouldn't ferment kombucha in one of those, but I have used HDPE in the past.

Because of the acidity of kombucha you'll want to use #1 PETE or #2 HDPE only. You'll also want to dedicate any container that contained bacterial fermention to just those ferments. You'll risk infection. Star San uses acidity to sanitize, so I'm not confident it would kill the acetobacter should you need to use the bucket to ferment ale/mead/cider later.
