I'm going to be brewing an Oatmeal Stout soon and want to try and add some all-spice and cinnamon to half of it. Normally I've added spices near the end of the boil but I'm thinking about not adding them until I rack to a secondary. That way I could just rack half to another carboy onto a couple qts. of water boiled with all-spice and cinnamon. I would like to have the remainder unspiced.
My question is: would I get any flavor from the spices or just aroma? I'm trying to avoid making two boils just for the spices. Trying to keep the brewing process simple since it'll be my second AG batch. I want to be familiar with the process before I get crazy with it.

My suggestion would be to get some cheap vodka or neutral spirit and steep the spices in a small amount of it. This way you'll have a spice liquer(melange? :p) and can add as little or as much as you want into secondary.

Oh, and you'll get flavor. I made AHS's Pumpkin Ale and Special Holiday Ale last year and both were well received from their spice flavors. :fro:
