Hi, everyone,

I'm about to experiment with PIH (Pre-Isomerized Hops). Needless to say, Beersmith and similar calculators weren't designed for that. PIH can be added as late as you want (I'm looking at a 10 minute boil) because to all intents and purposes they behave pretty much like hop extract. You don't need to boil to isomerize and your extraction efficiency is not a factor of boil time any more.

However. What I'm wondering about is how much PIH to use in comparison with, say, a normal bittering hop of the same Alpha Acid ratings. if a recipe calls for, say, 20 grams of 10% AA bittering hops, how much 10% AA PIH would I use? I'm going to experiment of course, but it would be handy to have a ballpark value from anyone already familiar with this.

Any ideas on this?

Cheers!

Formula
To figure out the amount of IsoHop needed, you must first know:
- How many IBU's you want to add to your beer
- How many gallons you are going to add it to
Then take those numbers and plug them into this equation:
B x V x 0.0117/30 = I
Where B = IBU's required, V = volume of beer in barrels, and I = amount of IsoHop in Liters

What do you guys think about the taste of pre-isomerized hops and what's the difference in the taste of beer?

Anyone know where you can buy iso pellets? I've never heard of them but I am very intrigued.

...Iso-Pellets and the
assumption that the utilization of the iso-α-
acid is likely to be at least 50 % better than
that achieved with standard pellets...
So you would use half as much to get the same IBU's, but unfortunately it seems you'll get the same IBU's from late additions as from bittering additions.
Utilization
Utilization of Iso-Pellets, including late
addition aroma pellets
, is typically in the
range from 45 – 55 % based on HPLC in
product and in final beer.

I find with so many amazing flavor/aroma varieties with high AA make it hard to keep IBU's low enough in light ales with only late additions. With these pellets everything I brew would be 100+ IBU's.
