Don't forget about the Otterbois that'll trash the vanilla one for being a pastrywine.

I expect the vanilla version to be the lesser of the two but it probably won't be a vanilla bomb like caution has been in the past. I probably won't get to try it anyway so my opinion means squat.

Got a nice care package from Pittsburgh today. Figured I'd crack a few for my bday. IPA game down here is comparable to Pittsburgh so don't miss that really, and the wild ale scene is probably actually better, excluding Strange Log, but man does this stuff remind me that the big BA beer/stout game is weak as hell down here. I guess it makes sense given the climate though. Anyways, had Really Thin Pancakes, which is waaaaay better than Mornin Delight, in case dadavat was wondering, and BG IV which somehow trumped III. Both top level beers and a showcase of what they're both capable of.

I'm gonna come in with the unpopular opinion that iv was decent but nothing special and not worth the cost. I'd put it in the realm of backwoods and wulver, both of which are cheaper and easily accessible. I guess pgh is blessed with one style of great shelfie action with ba scotch ale/wee heavy. Should be easy to do a side by side.

While I thought BG IV was more complex than those two, for me the biggest difference was drinkability. I love Backwoods and Wulver, but they're both pretty hot booze wise , especially Wulver. IV seemed a lot more well rounded to me. I likened it to Alesmith BA Wee Heavy rather than backwoods or Wulver.

Funny, I was also going to put IV in the realm of backwoods and wulver, which means I thought it was ******* phenomenal. Backwoods is still my favorite Founders beer (with the possible exception of black biscuit, which I remember loving, but is forever lost to my aging, beer-drowned memory), and I think I slightly preferred wulver to backwoods. If anyone got bottles of IV and wants to, we should definitely try a side-by-side-by-side.

I loved the newer TW, but it's so barrel-heavy, it's completely unlike any of the other previously discussed wees. Tasted more like a ba old ale to me.

I had 1 bad OG Ten Wee (similar to stakem's notes) vs 2 fantastic nearly perfect OG bottles. The bad one was maybe at a year and a half old? The good ones were hot off the presses.

I had to check to see if I even had the new one... so that says something right there. Despite this, I apparently liked it better than the OG Buffalo Trace but not quite as much as the OG Eagle Rare.

I like talking about old Pittsburgh beers.

I didn't by any means think it was bad, but just not enough better than shelfies i can pick up at any giant eagle at half the cost or less. I guess its more of a testament to the fact that we have awesome shelf beers of at least one style.

To add my two cents, i liked the new TW but my bottle had some of that green apple-y barrel flavor. It wasn't off-putting and i enjoyed the whole bottle.

I think BA scotch ales/wee heavies age weird. They can get a cola-like flavor. Anyone else ever notice that?
