That's cause those races are just insanely massive parties.

Exactly. It has nothing to do with the actual race. Those races aren't keeping the industry alive. The "whale" betters don't even bet on those races because of how skewed the betting lines are with all the people randomly throwing their money around.

Betting on sports, outside of fantasy football (if you consider that betting/gambling), has never made much sense to me.

Outside of spillover from Kid Rock concerts and NASCAR fans, those are #oldmoney parties--throwing down the price of a Honda for a ******* cocktail or Dr. Seuss hat.

I don't know man...yeah, there's def an oldmoney presence, but I ended up at the preakness a couple times with some of my buddies who were going to school near there at the time...definitely a good bit of college folk in attendance...at least at the preakness.

Yeah, I always see people around my age posting pictures of the Derby, Preakness, etc, but it's just there for the drinking and fun of dressing up like a southern Belle or gent.

I mean, we got our asses banned.

I thought that was only a temporary ban, not a perma-ban?

Since the best beer from a Pittsburgh brewer(!), Breakfast of Champions, is on tap at Voodoo Homestead right now, everyone who is anyone should have been there at 3PM and on their second pint of BOC by the time MBP news hit the book.

Variance is a pain but if you put your time in, it can be fruitful. I bet on MMA as I follow it pretty intently but aside from that, I don't play any other sports. You REALLY need to follow whatever sport it is to be successful long term. Even in MMA, there is a TON of variance (******* Bisping knocking off Rockhold and Henderson KOing Lombard on Saturday as prime examples). Makes watching the fights more interesting when you have a few bucks riding on the outcome.

I saw a video after the Derby of a fist fight that broke out there this year... It was all drunk, 20 something preppy looking *********s wearing pastel colored shirts.

Edit: here it is

Worst case scenario for that dood that threw that haymaker and slipped... kicks to head while on the ground are a super bad time

All I could think of when I saw that was The Outsiders. This is what happens when the Socs fight among themselves.

Those kids looked so young and their punches looked aimless. That dood took a good shot from that first guy and didn't really phase him. 3 on 1, too. I love the kick-in-face-kids fighting stance: guard down around his hips then telegraphs his wild punch with a nice cartoon wind up.

These kinds of shenanigans are what is wrong with betting on horses that don't know they're racing.

I've been to the preakness the last few years and this is pretty accurate for the in-field area; its a full on bro **** show in there. For instance the running of the porta potties..

Overall, I know nothing of horse racing or gambling, but still have a great time. It has always proved to be some of the finest people watching ive ever seen.
The beer scene is **** though.. This was the first year i stumbled into a booth that haD a jockey box and a few kegs of flying dog beers. Usually it is all bmc and $15 liquor drinks.

I know could ask probably a larger audience on here, but I'll ask here for now. Have a local brewery that cans near me. I've been burned twice now with cans from the brewery. The beer tastes good from the tap, but I take the cans home and it's like a shadow of the beer I tasted in the tap room. I know they use a mobile canner. I met a guy had the same thing happen. I was luckier then him because he actually sent a case of the beer out to friends before tasting the can.. He was mocked endlessly. The brewery just says we will try harder to make a better product. Anyone else experience bad cans or have any reasons?

Sounds like you've tried examples from multiple "cannings"? Does it taste oxidized? Has to be something in the canning process if you ask me...especially if others have noticed it as well. Have you brought it to the brewery's attention? Not in a "your cans suck" sorta way, but rather..."I've noticed your beer tastes different in the can, have you noticed the same thing"?

EDIT: I see this now...

My local(ish) brewery uses a mobile canning unit for their pounders, too. They made a (somewhat) hoppy blonde for their last release, and it was like a different beer on tap. Much, much worse from the can.

That’s part of the reason why I don’t intend to buy any BA Gratitude this year. The price is what it is, but it’s the oxidation from those canning units that scares me.

Yeah, it was 3 different cans, canned on different days. All the hops were muted, a little less carbed, and mostly a malt bomb. I mentioned it online, but it's 40 minutes away, so I only stop when I'm out that way. Next time I definitely will talk to them. Its a shame since it is decent beer on tap.

I've been there a few times as well. It has nothing to do with the race, but it's hard to turn down Puddle Of Mudd live with unlimited Bud Select.

That was an actually street fight sponsored by Vineyard Vines to make their brand appeal to the tougher guys in the South

No, agree--that's sort of what I was getting at: that it's like Hunger Games inside.

Watching other people play sports has never made much sense to me. (With the possible exception of getting pointers for your own game.)

Edit: Also makes sense if you know the players personally and are providing emotional support.

FTW Buckeye Canning does their runs now and they're pretty anal about DO. They use Fat Head's lab (which also uses them for canning) to test DO and I have been told by other brewers that their DO is between 20-25ppb. Anything below 25 ppb is considered great.

That's good to know. I'm not sure who my local brewery uses, but every single beer they've canned has tasted better on tap. Maybe I will get some BA Grat after all....

Realize this is Pittsburgh thread, but we seem to have outliers: what about Kelso in Brooklyn--anyone had them recently or know if they use mobile canning? Noticed that Industrial in cans was washed out and hot last time I had it, few months back.
