I have been moaning about getting a motorized paddle set-up for my mash tun for a while. Today I got the motor on ebay for $31.00! :ban:

It is an old bodine motor with a 100 to 1 reduction gear on it. It is a 1750 RPM motor which means with the reducer the paddle with run at 17.5 PRM. Can't ask for better then that. I can't wait to get it in hand and set it up.

I believe I will build a new lid with the motor mounted on it, make a hinged section for access, drill a hole for the paddle shaft, so on and so forth.

If you have design ideas, speak up. I could put a pulley on the motor and run a belt to drop the paddle rpms even more. That would prevent problems with direct drive, motor over-heating problems.

Let the fun begin.

Don't worry about dropping the RPMs even further. 17 will be just fine. Get a lid and mount the motor so the axle goes down the middle. You may want to cut the lid and add hinges so you can open a part of it while the motor is attached. How are you making the paddle?

I plan to do the same once I actually get started on a brewery upgrade.

How much horse power is the original motor? In rotation, torque is the major player, and seeing that your mash tun is fairly wide you will want a lot of torque. If it has enough torque another .25 reduction would made a nice stiring speed I think, one rotation in a little under 15 secs. Also a pully would make it easier to mount. You could put it on a the side of the tun instead of on the top.

I am going to have to see how slow it really goes once it is in hand. I definately will make the lid so I can get at the works while the motoe is going. The motor is 1/4 horse. I like the pulley idea because it would allow for the easy use of bearings on the shaft of the paddle, but then again, direct drive would be a simple set-up.

I am not sure what I'll do for the paddle. Go haunt the stores and see what is out there. I am thinking more along the lines on a rake or knife set-up, rather then a solid paddle. Offset the rake/knife blades so it mixes as it slices. I am not sure.

That motor will have enough torque for the application with that reducer on it. If you put it on the side of the system of might want to have a double lid, put one lid that actually seals the system down on the bottom have some insullation and another lid on top. Connect the two so it one whole thing. This will make sure that the paddle doesn't twist under the force that the motor might put on it.

Brewpastor I bought an electric ice cream maker at a yard sale, mounted it to the lid of my mash tun. It works great has enough power turns nice and slow I do 20 to 25 lbs of grain and it never bogs down. You can find them for 5.00 to 10.00 has paddle and all
