What purpose does the Like button serve? I've never understood it and don't use it.

So back in the old days of forums people used to reply with a "thanks for the info" post or "I agree" or something similar. Things got really cluttered up and the real discussion would get lost. Some forums had a FAQ or forum rules area that would say not to post a "thank you" post for this reason. The whole "like" thing just stemmed from a way to streamline forums without cluttering them up.

Thanks for the info. I agree.

I guess that makes sense. Appreciate the serious response.

haters gotta hate! :ban:

I will use the 'Like' button just to acknowledge that I have read a post that may have responded to me. I don't always have a reply worth adding, but if you 'Like' the previous post, at least the other person knows that you read what they wrote.

And there I was thinking I'd found a kindred spirit on the forum. A big 4 with a red square around it. My eyes grew wide with delight.

Way to toy with someone's emotions man.

Sorry bout that, buddy. Who knows, maybe I would have still liked your posts even if I had read them.

Unfortunately, I'm at work and didn't have time to read them. Just like them.

Copycat.

I'm not gonna even like your post.

@kingl1ves didn't display the same level of fortitude and resolve, quitting after a few posts on his short pages.

Luckily owing to the fragile nature of my tender emotional state, I was not a victim to his laissez-faire whimsical use of the like button.

I can’t believe it never occurred to me that people might actually care about “likes” on the internet. I don’t use or pay attention to that aspect of internet life, and never have. It’s not that I mean to be insulting to anybody, it’s just that the whole concept has always seemed pretty shallow and pointless. Guess I was wrong, and there is a good chance that everybody I’ve associated with online for the last several years thinks I’m a dick.

The real clutter is avatars, signatures, poster stats etc. All these things stretch the vertical taking up screen space.

Most noobs, I'm guessing and including myself, probably didn't know you could like a post. Typically on most forums I have belonged to, if you like something you might post a +1 or something or maybe just make a comment as such. Or is this facebrew?

My biggest peeve is when someone quotes a rather lengthy post in its entirety, just to add one stupid sentence at the bottom. Learn how to trim quotes, people!

Eh. People like positive feedback, as long as they feel it's sincere. Yeah, you're right about that dick thing.
