This time....a baseball riddle.

A minor league umpire told this to me several years ago.

What is the most amount of pitches that a batter can see without ever offering at a pitch in one at bat until he either walks or strikes out?

Depends on what spot in the lineup he is in..

Joe Buck and crew... Watched the Tiger, Red Sox game. Truly hate these announcers. It seems that they are given 40 or so talking points for a game and they insert one of these points randomly during a game. If an oddball comment is made by one of the announcers then they will follow it up with more banal comments on the off topic. The worst is when they try to inject controversy on a similar play that we have seen called hundreds of times over 40 + years. I realize they can't be up to date on every team, but it's like they don't even try to do homework. They rely on whatever information is fed through an ear piece to them, and the person feeding them info is reading it off pre prepared cards. I would rather listen to the opposing teams announcers, it might be biased but at least the announcers know one of the teams playing.

I thought about it. Six seems like the obvious answer, but it's a riddle, so....

I'll go with 11. Let's assume his at-bat stretches across 2 innings. With a full count, the 3rd out is recorded on the field somewhere, so he comes back up in the next inning, and walks on another full count. Maybe that's stretching what is an "at-bat". Anyhoo, that's my guess.

I'll say it's theoretically infinite. Suppose the pitcher throws high and tight repeatedly and the batter in an effort to get out of the way has the ball contact his bat and the ball goes foul. It's a foul ball and the batter never technically offered at the pitch.

I actually enjoy watching opposing teams broadcasts if the crew is winning. Usually I only see the Cubs guys, but it is fun listening to them whine

Winner winner chicken dinner. You are correct.

Someone else mentioned infinite. If a ball hits the bat, regardless if the battter actually swung or not it is still counted as 'offering' at a pitch. That's why the answer is not infinite.

I assumed that was correct but thought I would test the definition of "offering" anyway.:)

Think of it like this, if the ball hits the bat and lands in fair territory, the batter has to run to first. Any pitch that hits a bat is considered an offering. I don't agree with the original question answer because of how the at bat is scored but it could and has happened.

How about them Tigers! That was a long ass game though. We had to eat dinner at the start of the 11th, and the Sox at bat lasted the whole dinner. Got back in time to see the 3 runs in the bottom of the inning..

****ing Giants. Pitchers need to get their **** together, scored enough runs to win all three of those games.

As long as we are playing, here's one you will prolly all know:

There are seven different ways a batter can safely reach base. What are they?

Seriously!

I was literally banging my head against the bar as I watched them slowly lose an almost sure thing today...

Didn't look at the link, but the answer has to be zero. Reliever comes in, picks off a runner for the third out, and his team takes the lead while he is the pitcher of record. Gets the win without throwing a pitch.

Winner... the link is to an actual game where this happened.

7 ways for batter to reach base

Hit, walk, hit by pitch, error, fielder choice, 3rd strike passed ball, catcher interference.... I'm trying to find out what happens when a catcher uses his face mask to stop a ball from going from foul territory to fair. Last year the Tiger catcher Avila had removed his face mask and used it to stop a ball that was slowly rolling away from him with no chance of going into fair territory. It was ruled a balk. But it got me thinking what would have happened if the umpire decided that a catchers equipment was used to prevent a HIT ball from going fair.

Edit.....It's considered detached equipment... I think if I read the rules right the batter would be awarded 3 bases. That makes it 8 ways to reach base.

You forgot: Get her drunk.:rockin:

In other news, the Sox are 0-3. Blown saves in the 9th and 11th innings.

The pitching will come around, those guys are too good not to. I still think if it comes back to what it has been the last 2 years that they'll go to the Series.

Oh and don't worry too much, we have Zito going tomorrow, he'll be the stopper!:drunk:

I'm digging the trivia questions! And I'll take 2 of 3 every series, all year long and not be disappointed! Although we should have won Saturday too. Effing Mark Lowe! One of the few Rangers I just don't trust!

Here's another riddle. 50-50 chance at this one.

A pitcher pitches the ball, a batter hits the ball, the ball hits the rubber part of the mound and nothing else then bounces into a dugout. Fair ball or foul ball?

Fair ball (I'll take the other "50"). I'm guessing this is wrong, but I find it hard to believe.

Depends....if the path of the ball into the dugout goes beyond first or third base, it is fair. In other words, if the ball bounces and crosses the line on the outfield side of first or third (dugout would have to be pretty long or positioned oddly) it is fair. If it crosses line between home and first or third, foul ball.

EDIT...the more I think about it the more sure I am that it would be a foul ball. Anytime a ball hits the mound you play it the way it ends up. If it goes straight up into the air the fielder has to wait for it to come down to play it. If it deflects left or right too bad, you got to play it... if it goes foul... it is foul... Final Answer...
PS... Bouncing into a dugout means nothing to this question. If the ball rolled past the line by an inch it would still be foul.

Fair Ball. Batter takes an extra base.

Rule 2.00 (Foul Ball) Comment: A batted ball not touched by a fielder, which hits the pitcher’s
rubber and rebounds into foul territory, between home and first, or between home and third base is a
foul ball.

By that definition, from the Official Rules of MLB, the only way it would be fair is if, when it crossed the foul line, it was beyond or directly over first or third base. Then it would be an immediate dead ball, all runners advance 2 bases from time of pitch.

The answer: Foul Ball

The reasoning: it never passed the first or third base bag. Think of it like a bunt where it can start fair then roll foul.

I am liking the Brewers' approach so far this year. Lotsa small-ball. They're gonna bunt and run the opposition to death!

LOL it must be cold tonight in Chitown. Everybody is wearing ski masks.
