Someone else mentioned infinite. If a ball hits the bat, regardless if the battter actually swung or not it is still counted as 'offering' at a pitch. That's why the answer is not infinite.

I assumed that was correct but thought I would test the definition of "offering" anyway.

Think of it like this, if the ball hits the bat and lands in fair territory, the batter has to run to first. Any pitch that hits a bat is considered an offering. I don't agree with the original question answer because of how the at bat is scored but it could and has happened.

How about them Tigers! That was a long ass game though. We had to eat dinner at the start of the 11th, and the Sox at bat lasted the whole dinner. Got back in time to see the 3 runs in the bottom of the inning..

I'm trying to find out what happens when a catcher uses his face mask to stop a ball from going from foul territory to fair. Last year the Tiger catcher Avila had removed his face mask and used it to stop a ball that was slowly rolling away from him with no chance of going into fair territory. It was ruled a balk. But it got me thinking what would have happened if the umpire decided that a catchers equipment was used to prevent a HIT ball from going fair.

Edit.....It's considered detached equipment... I think if I read the rules right the batter would be awarded 3 bases. That makes it 8 ways to reach base.

Depends....if the path of the ball into the dugout goes beyond first or third base, it is fair. In other words, if the ball bounces and crosses the line on the outfield side of first or third (dugout would have to be pretty long or positioned oddly) it is fair. If it crosses line between home and first or third, foul ball.

EDIT...the more I think about it the more sure I am that it would be a foul ball. Anytime a ball hits the mound you play it the way it ends up. If it goes straight up into the air the fielder has to wait for it to come down to play it. If it deflects left or right too bad, you got to play it... if it goes foul... it is foul... Final Answer...
PS... Bouncing into a dugout means nothing to this question. If the ball rolled past the line by an inch it would still be foul.

By that definition, from the Official Rules of MLB, the only way it would be fair is if, when it crossed the foul line, it was beyond or directly over first or third base. Then it would be an immediate dead ball, all runners advance 2 bases from time of pitch.
