I know what you mean by their distinct flavor. I also pick it up in bass pale ale.
Funny you mention Bass. I was at a bar a couple of weeks ago and ordered both a Bass and a Fat Tire. They both tasted like ASS, definitely skunky. But in these breweries' defense (both of whom I love), I'll chalk it up to a crappy bar or distributor with sub-standard storage conditions.

Yeah you will have that sometimes. especially where those beers are not that popular and they sit around forever.
